Which OS is better for games?
It's amazing how fast people can change. I remember when Win10 came out, EVERYONE on this board was 10,000% against it. "Don't get it!" "It sucks!" "Stay with previous OS!"
Now?
Everyone recommends it.
I just find that a little fascinating.

Well, it had a few updates over the years. There are also a lot of guides now to disable every annoyance on win10 (cortana/telemetry etc), just not as good as 7 after the initial install, but for everyone that gives it a bit of time it can be better.

I don't think that everyone was against it. It's just that the more balanced view was 'wait and see', so these people were not really represented. Now that most people do have experience with 10, most of the anti-10 views are from those who don't want to change due as a matter of principle.

most of the anti-10 views are from those
These days, I nearly never see an "anti-10 view" from anyone who hasn't had direct experience with the OS, actually. Take just the critical comments in this thread, they seem to primarily be based within personal experiences.
Put another way, "I regret my updowngrade" is by far the most common sentiment these days.
Maybe once 2021 rolls around, Win10'll be worth better consideration, but at the moment, it's still extremely hard to justify it over 7, unless you absolutely need DX12 support for the games you want to run.

I see lots of 'I'll never upgrade to 7 because of privacy'. That's the most common thing I see. I see the upgrade issue kind of like Vista, which people hated initially for a reason, but grew up quickly to be quite usable and a good upgrade over XP (as long as you have enough RAM).
Personally there are some things I appreciate about 10. I can't go back to the old environment variables window, for example, and I really like the right click menu on the start button. There are also some API updates I appreciate, and even some things out of Microsoft's control, like NVIDIA only supporting video encoding in Media Foundation on Windows 10 (NVIDIA just loves making life hard).

I don't recommend it at all. I have to jump through hoops to install older hardware that requires drivers that aren't digitally signed.
Not to mention All the stuff that I am forced to keep on the system and cannot be uninstalled without jumping through hoops (I do not want nor need Cortana)

No! Windows Me was the best! (I'm semi-serious. My computer as a kid had Windows Me. It ran like a champ, never bluescreened, worked well. It was then upgraded to XP and blue screen constantly. Eventually it was replaced with a newer XP machine, but even that one wasn't as rock solid as my Windows Me one. I miss you Pentium 3 1GHz machine!

... Please tell me this is a troll for those who never actually had the misfortune of using Millennium Edition.
My best friend growing up had an HP with ME on it. It was constantly freezing, bluescreening, and had driver failures.
Once XP was put on there the machine was rock solid.

I am being completely honest! Windows ME was completely stable on my system. No matter how badly you abused it, it kept on going without blue screening. It was a custom built machine made with parts that were "Made for Windows Me" (or so all the boxes/stickers said). XP had driver compatibility issues which made the entire system unstable. The Geforce256 was the major source of crashing for that system, something was screwy with the driver updates for XP for it.

Must be nice. We couldn't go for more than an hour of doing anything without the system locking up entirely.

Neaa , I had win 10 for a period of time , I tested it when it was in beta and when it was free. Maybe when my laptop guarantee is gone and I can put a second HDD with a cady, until then my 16 GB RAM and Samsung Evo SSD works fine for me .
By the way I have win 8.1 :)) :V

The best of the two is the one which doesn't spy and sends to MS every little thing you have in your PC.

Windows 10 is better, why? Its newer, has the current ms full suport and can run dx12, 11 , vulkan etc, If you like W7 go for it but you will need to fix some issues to play some games, and you need to care for the fact ms is trying to make w7 die since they dont want another windows XP.

Win 7 is better for maaaaaaany retro games than 10....that's what i can say about it..

I didn't really spot a difference either, except some GFWL-Games arent working or need a patch.
Windows 10s automatic updates are really annoying though. My internet connection is rather slow, so everytime Windows 10 downloads their newest update I can't do anything online. Browsing takes forever, videos don't load on the lowest resolution and well, online games don't work properly either. And you can't pause the update :(

Has your friend tried compatibility mode on Win 10 to make the game run as if it is on Win 7?

Windows 7 because it never caused me problems when trying to boot my system or shut it down. For example when I was trying to do some DIY fixes on my laptop's PSU cable's few days ago when I chose shut down it says "shutting down" on blue screen and then just elegantly brings back desktop and we're ready to go (although we don't want to go :D ) so I had to manually shut it down by holding power button till it just cuts of the power. Later after I tried to turn on my laptop (after I was done fixing it), hardware just crashed on startup because I had to shut it down the way I sad (but I was thinking that I fried my motherboard because that's how stuff usually go when I try to fix them).
In the end, everything ended up being normal :)
Oh yeah, wanna play flatout 3 ultimate carnage on my laptop with windows 10? Hah, you can go f*** yourself because why the hell would Microsoft support their own games for windows live software, and also I'm very hyped about ads on windows explorer.
Sorry for long post, windows 10 is not bad but I prefer having control over updates and Microsoft forcing their users to update to windows 10 is not something I like.

never had win7, im fine with win10. upgrading from win8 to win10 ive noticed a better ram management, easily noticed with the only 4 gb i have.
Comment has been collapsed.
You should know by now that MS takes as much RAM as you have , I had first 4 then 8 then 12 and now 16 and each time the OS takes more ram just for his services.
Did some research and they say that are using this much ram to have it cached so you would get better speed but I don't see it that way :( .

I went from XP to 7, wish I had XP back.
Went from 7 to 10.
10 has it's problems, constant notifications that minimize my games.... I struggle trying to navigate my pc, not as plug and play as XP - 7 where the same base rule applied.
Would I get of rid 10 and go back to either XP or 7?
Probably not, it doesn't really matter to me, I get use to the problems and I learn to adapt to the new systems.
Prefer to have something new over something that isn't supported.
Although I do miss how easy it was to get into my BIOS with 7 and XP now it feels like a race with this "instant startup" if I could change anything it would be that hands down.

Windows 10 is just a hair better in my opinion. It has lower memory utilization at idle, faster boot times (not super relevant for gaming, but hey, it's something), generally better resource management, and great stability (at least on both the systems I've had W10 on). W7 isn't bad by any measure, and if the question were 8.1 v. 7 I'd be tempted to lean W7. However, I think W10 pulls ahead a bit. It's not a game changer, and "game mode" is really only useful for low end systems or people who have absolutely nothing running in the background, but if you had to pick between the two with no other considerations, I'd recommend W10.

Win7 boots way faster for me. Loading all the integrated processes (ranging from Cortana, to all the junk data collecting and auto-update elements they add to the Service Host processes, to Win Store InstallAgent processes) in Win10 seem to slow up the Windows boot-up process for Win10 enough that Win7 comes out ahead in the end, regardless of any inherent OS benefits 10 may have.
While I'm mostly referencing my old (and worse!) computer for Win7 boot up speed comparison, on my new PC I also started with a clean install of 7 and then upgraded to 10, so the difference was quite apparent even just on it, from the boots around that time.
None of the other things you mention in favor of Win10 match up to my experiences, either, though, so eh. It's a YMMV affair, I suppose. :P

Gaming wise not a big difference except some Increase / Decrease in FPS depending on what game you want to play.
I'm talking about like a 1-3 fps difference nothing major.
But you can have trouble running some older games on Windows 10 but there is usually already a patch for it or a easy fix so you really shouldn't bother about it.
In short if you want to play a lot of old games stick with Windows 7
If you want to play a lot of new games upgrade to Windows 10
If you really want to try to do something special and keep both to make sure you can run all games you can always keep both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Don't listen to the BS that Windows is spying on you they are but who cares it's ridiculous to care about them spying on you they only use it to improve their product or to simply sell some of your basic information to make some cash similair to facebook but not that bad and a lot of people still use facebook. Every company spies on you and there is nothing you do about it if you don't want anyone to spy on you should simple never use elektronics go live in the woods somewhere in alaska and even then will still steal your personal information.
Annoying parts are windows 10 updates if you don't know how to disable them. They are a lot of good guides out there to completely disable the updates.
Edge is also getting better and better internet explorer is complete trash compared to edge but edge is still trash compared to chrome speed wise but yeh i think it will always be like that.
Also all new software will be Windows 10 so you will eventually run into issues with Windows 7 one way or the other.

Some games perform better on 7, some games perform better on 10, most games is the same...

What I love about about windows 10 is their forced automatic updates and their forced reboots. Sometimes it reboots while you still have work open which isn't saved. Sometimes software stops working and it tells you "haha! we updated your pc so you can't use the following programs anymore:". And last but not least. The last time windows updated, it decided not to boot at all anymore. With the restore points that magically disappeared and not even being able to boot in safe mode I was ready to reinstall windows and all my software again.
It is truly lovely...

It is marvelous indeed .
WE bough a few new PCs for the office that came with Preinstalled windows 10 on them ... you had to see ppls reaction when the things decided to start updating and restarting mid day after 4 to 6 hours of no saving done .

Win 10 . Dota 2 45-60FPS .
Win 7 Dota 2 Stable 110 FPS .
Same PC >.>
That aside , im just used to WIndows 7 , and see absolutely no point to Upgrade ( if it can be called upgrade ) to 10 yet .
Then again i was using WIndows XP until like 3 years ago >.> So yeah :)

In my experience windows 10 is faster and lighter. Boot times are faster and I have no trouble running games, even the older ones run great. I can't really compare one system because my new system runs only on windows 10. The only problem is the "spyware" as some people like to call it, where the pc has more contact with windows servers. Easily removable though.
