Some people like to play depressing games when they are depressed, others like to play games that have a happier air about them, since as you said, everyone deals with it differently.
Here's some games I would suggest, I played them while I was depressed. They have some pretty sad moments, but very very good stories. And some are very addicting.
Bioshock Infinite,
Final Fantasy X,
Diablo III,
Starcraft II,
Metal Gear Solid series
I've also recently played Portal 2 and Thomas Was Alone, they have some pretty funny narratives if that's your thing, and they are both pretty challenging puzzle games.

Oddly enough, Beat Hazard and Audiosurf are the two main games I resort to when I'm depressed(Although I play them a lot of the time while I'm "okay" too). I guess it's because I can play for as long as I feel like without feeling that I have a responsibility to complete a story or something. Plus I can also listen to dark music that, like you said helps remind me that I'm not alone, but usually after a spell of dark music I listen to something at the other end of the spectrum which sometimes gives me a bit of a lift in mood.
Battlefield 3 is usually something I play when I'm down, but I sometimes end up more miserable than when I started if I don't do very well in several matches, or I get into a rage when the rest of the team haven't been pulling their weight.
Skyrim is another good one for me, it sometimes gives me a bit of sadness for some reason, but it really does help take my mind off things after I've been playing more than half an hour and I'm usually left with a slightly better mood as if I've completed something.

I spent many years in severe depression as a teenager but didn't deal with it in remotely good ways. Studies have shown that focusing on your depression is a sure fire way to stay stuck in it though. As such I'd recommend focusing on things that distract you from it instead of things that are going to pull you into it and make you think about it.

I'm one of those lost souls who just wallow in self pity and stare blankly at a library full of games i've yet to play and can't decide which one to try, so i go add to it then become more depressed so sit staring at trade sites until bedtime... Though cookie clicker has filled my time recently :)

Destructive games can cheer some people up, like me. E.g. Just Cause.

Gotta try this game as well, sometime! Got the demo on PS3 once.

You're depressed huh? You can go through these steps, they help.
Are you under 20? If yes, you're not actually depressed.
If no, you're depressed and go get help.

And you obviously have never experienced anything like depression. People do suffer from depression under the age of 20, that's why medical help is offered to them/us. If you think otherwise then I'd like to know which rock you're living under.

Anything that have blood, lots of blood. Something about killing any stuff makes me calm again. And some others games, like: Gemcraft Labirynth, Little Inferno, Tropico 4 (i find it easy to just turn off everything and enjoy the game). Recently i've played To The Moon, highly recommend when you are in a low mood. Theres a few musics that i like to hear when i'm feeling down: Fun., Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons and Paramore. I don't know if you're into books, but helps me too.
I don't know what going on with you, but i hope you get better soon. Cheers!

So, I'm kinda going through a hard time and it isn't even a good time to get a shrink or a therapist or whatever. So I'm stuck at rambling with friends, watching random movies and series, screaming randomly at walls... and of course, playing videogames.
Now. I wanted to know what YOU guys play when you are depressed, personally, I play Beat Hazard or Audiosurf. Specially Audiosurf, since I can play that with only one hand, and just looking at the screen while I dwell in self-pity.
And I know everyone deals with it differently. Like, some prefer happy games, some during that time prefer to be stabbed than play those same games and prefer games that are equally as depressed as them to remind them that they are not alone in this moment. There's people in as much misery or more than them. And I have to admit I am more of the second kind, but for the sake of this topic, go with whichever, but I'd like if you could explain why it helps you in particular.
