so for new account creators, any way to skip the SMS protection thing? not a fan of giving my number

Don't think you can. Its probably a measure to stop people creating multiple accounts and selling them for profit.

Can you get Bnet authenticator or does it need to be SMS protection does anyone know?
I made an account a few days ago to link it to HB for the Overwatch and now want to take free Destiny but not sure if I should get authenticator if I need the SMS protection :S

I didn't need to do the SMS thing as I already had an account for years with them. I suspect for the new accounts being opened, you have to do the sms protection. I don't think you have to get the authenticator to be able to access your account.

"Free Weekend" isn't the same thing as "free," I don't think, but the announcement I am thinking of may simply refer to the new zone.

I might be missing context here. This is not a free weekend. It's the usual Claim now; Keep forever.-promotion.
Finding the game in the Battle.net client after claiming the gift is an entirely different story though :D
Edit: I think the free weekend you're referring to is the new Gambit mode (PvEvP-mode which is part of Forsaken). You can try that out for a week or so without owning Forsaken.

That is exactly to what I was referring.

I never understood why games that solely rely on microtransactions have any price tag in the first place. This is what the default state should be of CoD, Battlefield, Overwatch, FIFA, NBA, the new Need for Speeds, Assassin's Creeds, GTA Online, and all other microtransaction and lootbox-oriented games.

Break even? Break even?!
Activision has received FIFTY BILLION dollars in microtransactions in five years. That is ten billion dollars a year. As net gain.

Tal, your link doesn't say anything like that. And no, they don't rely solely on MTs.
All I'm saying is that you can't expect them to make as much cash going F2P. The stigma of F2P games might keep them from earning what they want from the title if it didn't have a premium entry price...
You are obviously free to go on hating them, I just remain indifferent as long as other people can make games I enjoy. I am just correcting the misstatement you made.

Because the models are very different.
CCGs and mobile RPGs are working F2P models with tons of games released that work as data.
AAA shooters/sports titles from these companies being free to play on day one isn't something they've really experimented with, as far as I know. I wouldn't say that the couldn't make as money by going F2P, I just say I don't know and big companies are really risk-averse so they are bound not to take any chances (less so with large budget games).

While this may be true for their whole portfolio Destiny 2 itself has reportedly performed pretty poorly due to various reasons most prominently a lack of content and quality. That's why they intent to monetize it even harder and are currently selling emoticons from previous Seasons for the bargain price of 10€ for one rare emoticon (5€ and 3€ for the not so rare ones if I remember correctly).
It's actually quite hilarious if you think about it.

The spiral Activision commandeered itself into as it grew too fast and it cannot satisfy its investors any more, since continuing that growth is almost physically impossible now? Yes, it is, although if they crashed and dragged their entire monetising technique package with them would be the best punchline imaginable.

One can only hope.

True. A 7-billion yearly revenue makes it damn close though:

And over half of that was "in-game" revenue.
