Yesterday was a historic evening for me. I completed the game Oxenfree, which was the first game I've actually played to the end since Skyrim on the Ps3, like 5 years ago.

I've always had the habit of playing games and stopping midway to try another game... Tomb Raider, Witcher 2, Victor Vran, Pokemon X... are all games I've enjoyed but randomly ditched. Even Tales of Symphonia, one of my very favorite RPGs, I stopped right before the final boss (;.

And when I think about it, it's not only games that I don't complete. Hobbies such as singing, playing the piano, the guitar, nail art ( I mean nail polish not hammering nails to a canvas:^) ), are all skills I've picked up partly and then moved on from. What's my problem? D:

This also includes TV shows I really enjoyed, such as Gotham, Revolution, and House MD, that I randomly stopped for no reason. I'm mostly okay with books - those I usually finish, thank God (;.

Anyway, last week, I was thinking about it, and I decided to push myself to finish games that I enjoy! Perhaps start collecting achievements and perfect games sometimes too. Yesterday, I was going to try some random game, but I lit up a candle, made some tea, and forced myself to finish Oxenfree. It was awesome! The game is great ,and witnessing the ending of a game is an amazing thing!

So yeah. Watch me, because I'm on FIRE now!

Oh, and I may have a couple of games for you guys:)

Good luck!

I don't see any reason not to see what I'm doing. I'm complaining. It's plenty obvious, and I'd be the first one to know what I was doing.
None of this answers either question though.

I know that.

You know, people are a sum of their habits. I do coaching that's kind of related, as a job, and I personally believe in a little bit of conditioning. Encouraging good habits, discouraging bad habits. Questions are fine sometimes, but complaining is usually not. It's more often than not a negative thing. Not just towards the other person, but towards yourself. your inner language (or NLP you can say).... which can lead to being a negative person in general, which is not a good thing.

Not knowing all the answers to something is better than being negative, contrary to some beliefs.

It's hard not to be negative when blogs keep getting shoved in my face everywhere I go when I'm not even remotely interested in a stranger's bowel movements or whatever other inane essay they're writing.

You can't control other people, but you can control yourself, and how you look at things.. what you expose yourself to, and what importance you put to each thing you experience.
It all comes from your inner dialogue.

I have nothing against you, we're all a little fragile, we all get frustrated, try to be happy, etc.

But if you get annoyed by a post on a message board, that you could have just not opened. It's just going to get worse from there. Work. Relationships. Those will also bring frustrations, and will be harder to avoid (honestly, this thread is just a click away from escaping, it is nothing).

I would try to make conscious effort, now.

Good luck, you can do it <3 ~ personally, I think you sound intelligent.

Of course I can control myself. I'm at the top of a very short list of people who can operate my body. That list is me and me alone.
That has nothing to do with how, no matter where I go, there's someone who's throwing around bits of their personal life and expecting strangers they've never met, let alone known, to care. Breakups, dates, purchases, sales, and all that happens are some empty congratulations or condolences.
I could ignore it and play some other game or go on some other website or whatever, but this happens everywhere, and I like having more variety than just single-player games and Japan only MMOs. Complaining about it is just barely better.

We live in a social world. People will want to open up and talk about things you don't necessarily care about. It's human nature to seek companionship, to seek understanding... to seek to be with people. Kind of like how I made this thread and was happy about the attention. Kind of like how you read my thread and replied to it, even if it was complaining.

Emotional intelligence. Social intelligence. Both of these types of intelligence I believe have more value than IQ, or logic... whether the end game is a relationship, a promotion at work, or general happiness. The emotional intelligence will usually help you acquire any of that.

I can tell you have the IQ. Which seems to be a curse as much as it is a blessing.

Fortunately for you, while IQ isn't something that is simple to increase.... emotional and social intelligence is something that can easily be worked on. Or learned through experiences. And after a while, you actually do start caring (;. It's not so empty anymore.

You should give it a conscious try. The alternative unfortunately is continuing to do what you're doing.

There's no point in being social when you don't know the people you're being social with. Using your examples, it's like performing an experiment without having a goal in mind.
Being especially emotive or social has a time and place, same as being especially logical. That time and place is not with people you will never interact with again.
That's probably the most elaborately anyone's called me a heartless asshole, though.

Hehe, congrats on finishing your first game in a long time! I do suggest achievement hunting, if that'd help you get to finish other games. I find that cheevos really help push me to finish games sometimes... if not, then as much as I can before I decide to "take a break for an indefinite amount of time"

What's my problem? D:

I rarely play a game through to the end, there's always something new to try, or I reach a point in the game where I get bored or frustrated and don't feel like subjecting myself to that unnecessary aggravation. :P I think I completed GTA4 on my old Xbox 360 before it got the red ring of death. I've finished some smaller games but as far as games that require more than one sitting that's probably the last one I played through to the end.

As long as it doesn't bother you, and that it lets you try more games, it's probably super okay;)
I was just feeling weird about it lately, thinking that I'd like to experience more 'endings' and closure

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, occasionally I will sit down and decide I want to play a game through to the end but that doesn't usually happen. :P

Books and movies, I think, are easier to finish because you know there is a limited amount of time needed. Only a few chapters remain and then I'm done with it, I might as well finish it. :)

As I get older it becomes harder and harder to find time for games or other forms of entertainment, so I tend to go for games where I can get in and get out quickly, without a huge investment of time. If I have 5 hours per week for gaming, would I rather play 1 game for 5 hours, or play 15 different games for 20 minutes each? Or 30 games for 10 minutes each? :D

I don't have much more to add than other comments, you see it's a struggle for much people, problem is we have too many games, it didn't happen when I had to spend lot of money for them when I was younger playing with consoles, and had to make a game last at least some months :P I'm starting to talk like an oldie.

Thanks for the giveaway, I'm gonna start Hotline Miami 2 in those days, I'm sure I'm gonna finish it cause I loved (and finished) the first chapter, and cause it's like 6 months I don't play cause of my work, so I have some backlog to retrieve :P

I meant games as in games with stories, I guess, to experience the ending.

I 100%'ed Rocket League, for example, a multiplayer sports game... by scoring specific types of goals and such... or I think another game that was called It's Spring Again? Just clicking at random pictures meant for 4 years old :^)

Back when I played on consoles (I have about 150+ games I accumulated over about 4 years for xbox 360) I mostly finished nearly each game (except the odd few I really hated) that came my way, but since switching over to pc (master race nonsense) gaming I've found it really hard to decide on what to play. I've accumulated over 300+ games since last Christmas that I've either bought, gotten for free, been gifted or won, which is over double what took me 4+ years to get for 360. I tend to mostly find myself opening up Rocket League or something mindless like Battlefield or something where I can play against other people for an hour or two rather than digging into some of the games I've got with really nice story-lines. I've got things I bought ages ago like "Life is Strange" (the kind of games I like to play with in-depth story-lines & branching choices) & I've not even gotten round to installing it - oh well...

My most recent game finishes though were Batman Arkham Asylum, City & Origins. I've just moved onto Arkham Knight (but not liking it as much as the other 3 - graphics & fighting bits are really nice though - hate the forced car stuff mind).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I can relate to a lot of that:)
Having many more games now than when I was a kid (only one or two games at a time) makes a big difference.
And I also sometimes feel too lazy to try something new and more 'complicated', and instead open up Rocket League where I can play mindlessly;)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah Rocket League is probably like the equivalent of heroin for druggies. I keep on coming back to it & will happily spend hours playing games with friends or random people despite the fact I don't care about cars or football - who would have thought putting the two things together would create something so damn addictive!? :D
