As in games that made you really sad and maybe even want to cry - possibly leading to tears.

Here's my list, in order of their ability to manipulate me:

  • The Walking Dead
  • To the Moon
  • Mother 3
  • Bioshock 2 (not 1) (Some support, in case you heard the ridiculous claim that Bioshock 1 has a better story.)
  • ICO
  • Chrono Trigger (Maybe. Can't remember how effective it was, really.)
  • Mirror's Edge

No spoilers, please!

A very spoilery article from John Walker on Rock, Paper, Shotgun about games that made him cry. He adds To the Moon to his list in another article. I haven't played the games he talks about.

Metal Gear Solid - I had tears in my eyes at a few points there, for example when Wolf died. ---
Dead Rising 2 - Me and my buddy were freaking out when we found out that the black guy was a traitor who got our daughter haha.---
MGS 3 - oh my god.---
CoD 4 - When GAZ was killed.---
Mass Effect 2 - When those frickin flies thingys got Grunt, he was my fav. badass guy.

The fact that I went through 2 and a half pages before finding someone who mentioned that game makes me want to cry. Just like the game. Truly great story, and pretty good writing, especially as far as jRPGs go.

GTA 4 had something sad maybe. But there were many emotions during dead space. Best fear i had gaming was there. Amnesia is awesome too, but some levels in dead space were spectacularly emotional. Mostly fear ofc.

Can you believe that the trailer alone gave me some strong emotions? My guess is that it triggered two strong themes in my head: euthanasia and childhood dreams/innocence.

It gets even heavier in the game.

Hope you enjoy it!

For some reason I don't find games as engaging in that particular sense as say a good book and even maybe a really good movie

Then you should try Visual Novels :)

It's generally true that you shouldn't. Games are almost never written well enough to be as emotionally engaging as those things. There are some exceptions though! You should play To the Moon and the Walking Dead. =)
