For me Potato is a vegetable. I eat potatoes almost everyday as I like them very much.
To be honest I have no idea why people use Potatoes for other purposes than eating. Maybe "Pototo" is some higher tier of Potato, perhaps next evolution? People seem to like Pototos more than Potatoes in the Internet.
Oh, I think I mixed all the things up and got confused myself...

You know, I can still remember the very first potatoes given to me by my grandfather. They were Russets, and I was four. I had a bit of trouble peeling that dull golden skin, but then, well, I'll never forget that first taste. Earthy and starchy and uncommonly yuck. I remember feeling I must be someone very hated when my grandad gave me his awful dodgy potatoes. Well, now I'm not the grandad, cos I'm young, but if I had grandchildren, what else would I give them but potatoes? After all, I'm sure they'll be little bastards too, you know?

I didn't knew about the Hitler one. This meme really has various origins. The Ringer, the "Filmed with potato?", the Potato Jesus, the Hitler, Portal 2... that's a lot of sources for meme ramification. I believe each one of us who uses the potato meme comes from a different reference, that's why there are so many ways to present the mocking "potato" answer. Then ofc, we have those who get dragged by the term's popularity, and even though they don't exactly have a based reference, they use the potato thing cause it's accepted in the circle they are in (in this case, SG is potato-filled, and I'm sure many just use it cause they know it's popular, without knowing exactly why is popular, just like OP didn't knew)
