I believe that games, movies and books are made to entertain. Yet, if I buy a movie, watch it and find out that it's shit, nobody's going to refund my purchase even if I was far from being entertained as a result. In other professions, if you don't do a job right, you don't get paid, simple as that. Why should it be different in entertainment industry? So I have no problem with downloading a movie or a game and paying for it only if I liked it.

I pirate games to test them before I choose to buy. Most of the new games do not have a DEMO so my single option is to pirate. If I like it I buy it !

Piracy is wrong. No matter how you look at it, try to find excuses, it still be wrong. BUT...
I don't know anyone who didn't pirated at least once. Would it be a game, music, movie, whatever. Because it's free, it's available, it's sometimes so much simpler than buying the legal offer and if it's bad... well, it was free. And somehow, I can relate to it, because even when I think of the people who worked full-time on something, I also think of those companies that makes it worth 60€ when it does not. Or not yet.
Take Diablo 3. As great as the game is today, I felt I was totally ripped off when I play the game I bought in Collector, the first... well, nearly the first two months. It was unplayable, servers were down and all. Pirated versions were probably playable.
Take South Park's Stick of Truth. I had to wait for the day it was released, when pirated versions existed for a week already.
When they say that music industry suffers, well... it's deserved somehow. They sell CDs/DVDs/BRs at like 6 or 7 times the real cost price of it, not hard to understand what piracy is working well...
The best example to me would be Windows 7. How many Windows were pirated through time ? But how many people actually bought W7 when it was released at nearly 50€ ?
So it's wrong. But I can understand, sometimes.

It's ok if you're poor. But games are the most available and there's many good deals so it's much easier to buy games even of you're poor, steam is a wordlwide service. I myself never bought a movie or TV show in my life and not going to buy until there's no digital distribution service with fair prices. I'm not going to pay 20 euros + delivery for the movie, i'm not a minister or CEO and can't afford this. Even if i'd have the money i wouldn't buy movies, it's the most stupid thing. You want to see a movie with a girlfriend? Go order the movie and after two weeks you can watch it lol no thanks. Never bought any music too, but it's free with spotify anyway.

In my opinion, pirating is ok as long as it are big studio's like rockstar and ubisoft, never pirate indie games, they really need the money!

Damn you, now I have the song stuck in my head ^^

I think piracy is good and help sales. I used to be a pirate and now that i have some money i have nearly 1000 games on steam. I consider it the best advertising for games.

"without paying to the people who made it?."
You rarely do that, you're more or less paying the publisher. The people who made it get paid anyways before the release. But yeah I get the point you are making.
Honestly I pirate most games, simply because I can. Got a chipped PS2 back in the day, got a Wii with loads of games on it's external HDD. Have bought a shitload of PS3 games though as well as 3DS games. Hard to tell if it would be nearly as much if I had the opportunity to mod those. However in the end it doesn't make that much of a difference for the people who made the game because generally if I don't like a game I will stop playing and delete it. I would have never bought the game anyways. An example for the opposite are Wolfenstein New Order and Watch Dogs. I played through the Wyatt timeline and loved it. I then uninstalled it before I could play the other timeline and grab missing collectibles and such because I wanna buy the game now. Only need to find a good price for a German key. Kind of the same for Watch Dogs. It's really fun and entertaining and I will probably buy it eventually. And seeing how I have over 600 games on Steam I doubt I'm really doing that much of a bad thing by testing games like that before I buy them.

I downloaded a pirated copy of Dark Souls to see if it'll run on my PC as there were stories even before release that it's a bad port. i finished the game and then bought it.
did the same thing with Dark Souls 2 to see if it's optimised, then i finished the game, loved it, bough it, playing it :)
i don't think there's anything wrong with that
however i do no buy Ubisoft and EA games but i can't say i haven't played some of them if you know what i mean :)

And if you didn't like it, you wouldn't have bought it. Just because in that particular instance you decided to buy a great game (not to mention the benefit of multiplayer), doesn't mean it's in any way justified. Furthermore, you probably pirated it while it was full price and bought it while it was on sale, though I can't know with certainty.

so what i finished the game? i finished them a few times since i bought them as well. i bought 3 copies of Dark Souls PTDE total since the release of the PC version. I bought one for myself, one for a friend on PC and one for my brother on the PS3. i think that more than covers the price of the game i had the audacity to finish on release day while i waited for it download on Steam :p.
As for Dark Souls 2 i finished it only because i knew my save will not carry over i knew it'll be easier to start over with a new character if i don't have that one mid game in the back of my mind call out to me. it took me a few weeks to get the game but it was full price when i did and it still is.
As for Ubisoft and EA i'll get them in bundles or second hand like i did with Mirror's Edge and Prince of Persia games but i won't buy a thing from their store and it's not like i pirate their entire catalogs and then don't buy them. neither of those companies has many games i'm interested in. and you said i admitted having no intention to ever buy EA and Ubisoft games i played which is simply untrue (although i could have made that a little clearer, that one is on me :) ) much like the part about sale in the first message so don't do that. when Ubisoft stops holding Beyond Good and Evil 2 hostage i'll definitely buy it, second hand :p

"Oh, I pirated a game on release day, but I'll actually buy it during a massive sale a year or two later."
Also, key word: apparent.
As for Dark Souls, it's situational. There are pirates who play the full game then proceed to say, "I didn't like it, so I won't buy it." Also consider games that, unlike Dark Souls, do not have multiplayer or really any replay value, so many will not buy them even if they were excellent games.

Can't download the games for free -- too much in my Steam Library! (But pirates are ARRRight with me)

Piracy always means/meant stealing. Did i pirate games? Yes. Will i ever stop stealing? No. I won't pay even $0.01 if i can get it for free. I'm glad people keep buying games so developers keep making games so i can pirate them. That's how i roll. Deal with it. I'm from Turkey by the way.

Ah so you're not poor or someone having access difficulties or anything like that, but just a honest to goodness doo-doo head? How refreshing!

so you're basicaly relying on others to pay the devs and make new games for you to play and not give a penny. nice :/

It's hard to make an overall opinion about this. I work in the IT field, and everytime i see apps that we worked so hard on them and see the free on many torrent sites..it's kinda annoying and of course i get angry about it.
On the other side everybody pirates something. Everybody downloads 1 song or movie from torrents so that is piracy over there, even tough you may buy games or apps other stuff, you still pirate other stuff.
Of course there are many countries like mine where the medium salary is somewhere arround 300 Euros/month,and you can see that it's kinda hard not to pirate honestly.
There are good sides of piracy to, you can download a game and if you really like it you will buy it eventualy.

simple check the majority of the country or a region if they cant afford 50 60 dollars games then region lock the game and make it cheap for them this way developers make money and piracy will be minimized but sadly no one cares about those countries like india, pakistam, srilanka, bangladesh, and all sub continent countries in these there is a great number of people wanna buy games but just because those are too expensive for them they dont they pirate it instead.

In my opinion Piracy is OK.. If u want to multiplayer a game with random strangers u will probably have to buy it, but if u want to singleplayer the game u can download a pirat copy of the game. Only reason I would buy a game is to support developers, that why Humble Bundle is so popular.. u help if u WANT (not so much nowadays cuz they only give steam keys at 1$+)
Honestly Im taking and Engeneering in Informactics degree and I want to be a gamedev, and I still think piracy is ok :p

Piracy is not something should be allowed in game sector. In movie sector, there are already people who are going to watch movies in comfortable and big scene theatres but in game sector, there isn't such option. Furthemore, some indie developers are really in bad condition and trying to make their life with these games. I don't think game piracy is arguable.
Have a nice game week!

it is ok sometimes, for example i have a low pc so i downloaded pirate version of BF3 to test can i run it, and i cold so i baught it after week or 2. in my opinion games shuld have trial time for like 1 or 2 hrs because some pepole like me are not sure will it run/will they like it/is it worth it and after they try it pepole will be sure that they whant/dont whant the game.

I think piracy is no big deal. I don't know a single game that failed because of piracy, though the publishers love to say so.
If I plan to buy the game on sale (for different reasons), why should I restrict myself by not playing it now? Who would benefit from it? The dev would get the same buck, and I would get nothing from my self-imposed fasting. If I wait for too long, I can decide that I don't want it at all. They say piracy is "a sin", that while it doesn't hurt anyone (no one gets his bank account reduced by a dollar when you download it), you should consider it stealing and be ashamed of it. But I say that then it is also "a sin" to buy and store things you'll never use. I remember a developer who participated in a Humble Bundle and who was sad and worried to see that 95% of the people who bought his game didn't play it even for a minute.
Also, people say a lot about helping the developers by buying the game, but that works only for indies. Devs funded by a publisher usually don't get a cent from sales. This is especially true for older games, where the devs were fired|died|moved to another company long ago before the game even appeared on steam.

What do you think about downloading a game without paying to the people who made it?.
In my opinion:
Piracy is OK is you can not buy original games (for example: you live in a place where's hard to get games, you don't have a credit card, etc).
Piracy is NOT OK if you can buy games without any difficulties and you still download games in an ilegal way.
What do you think about this topic?
