Tl;dr: I'll add up your votes and post a new thread with the results after this one winds down.

Here's my vote: Ghosts N' Goblins is probably the hardest game (hardest for me to win) that I still enjoy.

SUPER MEAT BOY. Hardest game ever. Look at the leaderboards and see how many people finished all the levels.

CONTRA??? um, maybe at first, but once you get good at it, let's put it this way, on original nintendo, we could beat it, WITHOUT using the 30 lives code...yeap.. would die like twice the whole game. in fact, We'd usually play def leppards pyromania, and during the snow level, the big tank thing would always roll up right when that huffy voice on "Animal" would say, "HUUH HUUH HUH.... ANIMAAAL"

Please read the topic. You're supposed to pick the hardest game you've played and still enjoyed. If something was harder, please pick that. Not counting your vote unless I misunderstood what you're saying.

Super Meat Boy, without a doubt. Dark Souls really isn't all that hard. If you have trouble with it, it's usually because you're not paying attention and/or you're being lazy. i.e. not reading item descriptions or upgrading your weapons/armor.

I'd say add Gauntlet 1 for the NES to the list. I would always freaking die on like level 96 or 97 or some shit because the monsters would become so fast & furious and spawn like crazy from those damn generators. Never could make it to level 100.

Ninja Gaiden and Ghosts 'N' Goblins were tough but doable. Battletoads on the other hard was just plain infuriating. With stuff like the speeder bike and snake levels it was more about memorization than skill (or even reaction time).

Blaster Master for the NES. I have yet to beat that game without use of save states on an emulator or Game Genie on the actual NES. One of my favorite games of all time, but jeez.

I love it too. I played it on my cousin's NES back before I had one. Never beat it. I should play it with the help of an emulator now.

The harsh thing is that the only part that I NEED the Game Genie for (or to cheat on, essentially) is Area 8. Everything up to Area 8 is fine, if not hard at times, and the boss in Area 8 is also not much issue for me. It's just the radioactive thorns during the vehicle part of the level that get me. =(

Alex Kidd in Miracle World.
Not too hard, but the second half is unforgiving - especially if you miss something small halfway through.

The game of Real Life. It's so hard, that those who beat it are forced into secrecy of not being able to tell anybody else how to beat it! That's why people are still waiting for walkthroughs.

There are a bunch of walkthroughs! Some of them work better than others though.

I do love both of these. Amongst all recent games that do not even demand any player skill to complete - these two are true diamonds.
