It's a 3d person RPG/slasher. If you have ever played any slashers (like old classic "Rune") and if you love cutting your enemies into small pieces - that's one of the best games in genre. It is rather old - got published in 2001, graphics is outdated and animation is choppy, but lightning and special effects look pretty decent even today. With 4 heroes you get 4 completely different playing styles. Gothic castles, pyramids, very challenging enemies and lots of gore and blood. That was an awesome game, although each fight with each enemy could end with your death.

I still play this game!
It's not too hard though, but a comparison with the Demons' and Dark Souls game is very appropriate. It's all too easy with the amazon character though. Well, "Easy"; which means moderately hard for anyone not into late 90's hack & slash games like Die By The Sword, Heretic 2 and the Kain series.

Earth's Special Forces is the hardest game there is. It's a Half Life mod based on Dragonball Z. Last time I checked there weren't any servers for it in North America anymore.
In most multi-player games if you stick someone who has played the game for a few weeks in a server with someone that is reasonably good at the game, not great mind you, but just reasonably good they will eventually kill them. In ESF you stick someone who has played for a few weeks in a server with someone just so-so the new guy is going to rage quit after being killed 30+ times without ever even getting a hit on the other guy.
I was a so-so player and if I joined a server with a half dozen people that had only played for a few weeks I would usually be killing everyone on the server so fast that they couldn't even get kills in on one another.
In a duel with some of the players that were actually good at the game I could maybe get 3 kills in on them for every 10 they got in on me.
The game was so hard that it killed its playerbase. I have never played any other game where there were such gigantic skill gaps between players.

Tl;dr: I'll add up your votes and post a new thread with the results after this one winds down.
Here's my vote: Ghosts N' Goblins is probably the hardest game (hardest for me to win) that I still enjoy.

THE LIST DOES NOT MATTER! PICK ANYTHING YOU WANT!
Here's a list of some other games that I think are fun and hard, in case it helps anyone choose. You don't need to choose from this list, it's just to give you some ideas:
