So I have been watching a lot of anime, and I have started to hit a brick wall. I don't really know what to watch, and I've already been through many of the top-ranked lists. So I thought that I would come to the wonderful people of SG for some help! Feel free to recommend some things, and a quick explanation of why people should watch it would be great!

I have a MAL list of all the things I have watched and what I rated them. Although it would be lovely to rewatch things I have already seen, it would be better to find new and exciting things to view.

Also I'm sure you all came in for the giveaways rather than out of the kindness of your heart. People who mention a show that I haven't watched and explain why I should watch it will be added to my whitelist. These lucky people will be allowed to join a bunch of bundle giveaways, and then will be promptly dropped from my whitelist after the giveaways finish. I might also be putting up an anime puzzle in here when I have the time, so even those who haven't watched anime but love to use their google-fu can enjoy.

Anyways, thank you for your assistance! Lets all enjoy anime together!

TLDR: Give me recommendations not on this list and explain why, I give you games and love.

EDIT: Wow, that was a large response. I'll try to get through everyone and respond to all of your posts, and then I'll whitelist everyone and create some giveaways. Check back in probably 5ish hours and I should have everything ready by then. Thanks for all of the support and recommendations!

EDIT2: After responding to four and a bit pages of recommendations, I need a break. I'll be back in an hour or so, hang tight. Giveaways should still be up when I said they would be, never fear.

EDIT3: Back for more commenting. Hopefully I can get to the bottom of this thread.

EDIT4: Finally made it to the bottom! I'll add everyone to my whitelist now and then post up the giveaways.

EDIT5: Whitelist giveaways are now up. They are all cheap bundle games, but I hope people still are interested.

Giveaway 1
Giveaway 2
Giveaway 3

Giveaway 5

EDIT6: Giveaways are over, and I'll be closing this thread. Thank you everyone for the suggestions!

What is your favorite genre of anime?

View Results
Slice of Life
Action
Mecha
Magical Girl
Ecchi/Harem
GAR!!!!!!!
Other (feel free to say what is best)
I don't watch anime/I have no favorite

you should go for Robotics;Notes, i dont watch mecha (is kinda boring because there's always the same base story) but i enjoyed this one allot
i will edit this if i find anything else you may like

have you watched sword art online 2? only the first one is on your list (also it's 50% fillers or it seems so)
the first season of tokyo ghoul as ended and the new tokyo ghoul root A it's airing but it's much enjoyable
Hataraku Maou-sama! it's pretty good and it doesn't has that much action and so as Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta (this one is slice of life most like)
Tokyo ESP is kinda like marvel cartoons but still awesome
you never watched gintama :O it's 100% slice of life, it has some action but it's mostly fun
Zankyou no Terror it's pretty recent, the story is about the Death Note survivors but it's totally different from death note

Robotics;Notes is one that just slipped my mind. I wanted to watch it after it was done airing and I forgot about it. I will watch it eventually.

Sword Art Online 2 just finished airing recently. Just haven't gotten around to it.

Tokyo Ghoul is one I'm just waiting for the second season to finish. It looks pretty great.

Hataraku Maou-sama! looks great, I'll need to steal the DVDs from my friend for this one (unless the dub is terrible)

Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta was a series I didn't even know existed. Looks good, so I will watch it.

Tokyo ESP looks like another terrible Xebec release. I'll probably end up watching it, but I doubt I'll give it a high rating.

Gintama is still airing, and so I am waiting for it to finish. It probably will never finish, but I will still wait for at least another year or two.

And I'm currently watching Zankyou no Terror, although I paused my watching so I could respond to all of these posts.

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions!

I'm talking about all of the series. There has been a second and third Gintama already, and there is another new series from 2015 that is starting up soonish. So I will watch it all in one go, and then my brain will melt out of my ears.

Same with Hetalia, the sixth season was announced and so I had to groan and wait some more. More good things is good, but being a completionist who forgets storylines and would have to rewatch the entire thing to remember the series means its better to just watch it all at once. Waiting sucks...

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W (the second season)

These are some crazy anime's, about Cthulhu invaders from space, is a little pervert, but not that pervert as "Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai" for example. I started liking this anime after 3 episodes, because the story line is a little no sense, but it's very very fun after that, the jokes and everything is just hilarious.

Well, classic isn't always good. I probably won't be watching this, mainly due to how long it is. I do like some series like Maison Ikkoku, but it starts to drag on after 100 episodes of it. I have a feeling I would watch it all and start hating it since it doesn't do anything new after 120ish episodes. (I did the same thing with some other series)

Nanatsu no Taizai:It's an ongoing anime with slightly overpowered characters.
Resembles a bit with Akame ga Kill.

Psycho Pass 2nd season :I watched 2 episodes and I didn't liked it too much but maybe you will enjoy it.

If you liked Magi you can watch Magi: Sinbad no Bouken it's an OVA about Sinbad,it has the same feeling as magi.

If you like sports anime give a try to Hajime no Ippo or Kuroko No Basketball.
Hajime no Ippo is about boxing and it has 3 seasons and Kuroko it's about basketball(obvious) and has also 3 seaason...

But my best recommendation is Gintama. No superpowers no bullshit just pure comedy.

If you want you can look at my MAL list :http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Cr1sty.
Maybe you'll find something good to watch.

Of my favorite animes you havent seen two so i say

Sket dance: this show is a comedy, its rather simple and rather fucking hilarious, but also it have some drama sagas and they all make me cry like a baby, all character are awesome and the jokes are funny and original

DURARARA!!X2 SHOU, you have already saw the original drrr, i shouldnt have to explain why this anime is awesome

Parasyte - Kiseijuu Sei no Kakuritsu: pretty well known show already, the story is too interesting, and it have some kick ass battles

Tsubasa reservoir chronicles: another master piece made by clamp, i actually have some of the mangas of this because i love it so much, the story is super interesting and is mixed with ALL the other mangas by clamp, as is common for them, it is a paralel show with xxx holic you could say

i will remember more later

Sket Dance looks amazing. Now I can watch Gintama stuff without watching Gintama!

DRRRx2 is one that I'm waiting to finish airing. I'm way too excited, DRRR and Baccano are some of my all time favorites.

Parasyte is currently airing, the only flaw I can see in it. I will get to it once it finishes.

Tsubasa is one I've read the entire manga for, and I've heard that the shows are terrible in comparison. Is the anime good, or should I just enjoy the manga again at some time?

Thanks for the suggestions!

Actually the mangaka of Sket dance was an assistant Hideaki Sorachi(mangaka of Gintama) thats why it is so similar :D

regarding tsubasa i cant say it, i havent read all the manga, i am trying to buy it and then read it, but i really enjoyed the anime

So I've heard. I really love it when a good mangaka has assistants and they continue the original mangaka style (with their own flair too though).

And if the anime was good, I'll need to give it a watch.

Bokura wa minna kawaiisou - its a really cute romance/comedy/slice of life
Mazinkaiser SKL. A 3-eps OVA with brainless action and loads and loads of explosions and cool moves
Seitokai Yakuindomo. I dont know if youre into pervy humor, but this one is the best in that regard
Kinos journey - its a really good episodic anime which focus on kino nd the different towns and people he meets in his travels. Its the kind of anime that makes you think

Bokura wa minna kawaisou is one I was waiting for the last Bluray specials to air. Now that they have (as of Jan 30th), I will get onto watching this.

I love Mazinkaiser, and all the Mazinger stuff. I will definitely watch it.

Seitokai Yakuindomo looks very weird, but I am sure I can enjoy this one.

Kino's Journey was one that I wasn't sure about. It looks good, but it also looks very weak in both character development and plot. I guess I can give it a try.

Kdramas are excellent, not sure what you mean about normal dramas... You mean western TV shows? Korean Dramas are different, it's a bit more cliche but somewhat like anime where some shows are better than any TV shows.

I love psychological genre anime. If you like to think while watching anime i have something for ya.
Paranoia Agent - great anime with crime/detective theme which involves deep insight into humans brains (expect some psychedelia).
Galaxy Tatami - Weird but amazing anime with nearly unpredictable ending (if you won't watch with enough attention).
.hack// series - Set in mmo world anime where some "dark force" caused that some people ended up in comatose (sounds like sao, but this anime was first and it's way better imo)

Not so psychological but great too:
Sakamichi no Apollon - Jazz themed story of friendship
Trigun (How could you miss it?) - Post apocalyptic Western Sci-Fi often recommended along with Cowboy Bebop.

I'll add more when i find some time.

Paranoia Agent is one that I forgot about, certainly one that I will have to watch.

Tatami Galaxy is one I've already seen. It was quite spectacular.

.//hack is one that I don't really want to watch since you also need to play the games to fully understand the story. I don't have the time or motive to beat the .//hack games from start to finish and then watch the correct series inbetween.

Sakamichi no Apollon looks pretty great, plus I love jazz. Sounds like a good fit.

You are the 5th? person who has recommended Trigun in this thread. Might have to be the first thing I watch, seems very recommended.

Thanks for the suggestions

My recommandation, is to stop looking for anime for a big while and just enjoying real life. Then after enjoying real life, you could go rewatch all the anime you already watch by beginning with the worse and gradually to the best.

Comment has been collapsed.

Don't worry, I do go out and enjoy life. Anime is what I watch while I wait for the next entertaining time I can spend with friends and family.

Also I prefer to watch new things and only rewatch the best of series (or the really terrible ones so my friends can see them too and suffer). So interesting advice, but unlikely that I will follow it.

You've already seen most of the stuff I would recommend, but since you and I seem to have similar tastes (my list would be almost exactly the same) here are a few you might like which aren't yet on your lists.

  • Blood+ (Action, Mystery, Drama, a bit dark)
  • Bubblegum Crisis (Action, Drama, and cute girls)
  • Demon King Daimao (Action, Comedy, Drama, cute girls)
  • Fairy Tale (you've already got this one queued)
  • Kaze no Stigma (Action, Comedy, Drama, a protagonist who's actually competent)
  • Kenichi: Mightiest Disciple (Action and Comedy, and lots of it. Oh, and cute girls, too.)
  • Rosario + Vampire (Action, Comedy, cute girls)
  • School Rumble (Comedy, Slice of Life, cute girls)
  • Tenchi Muyo (Comedy, Sci Fi, Action, cute girls)

I purposely left off some titles for various reasons. For example, Rin, Daughters of Mnemosyne (too dark). While these titles are well-done, they aren't really something I would have chosen to watch had I known what they were really like.

Blood+ does look pretty good. I need to watch this one and Blood C.

Bubblegum Crisis looks like a fun and short series. I will have to enjoy it.

Demon King Daimao looks like a romcom harem series. I will look into it.

Fairy Tale is one that I want to finish. I started it and then realized it wasn't done, so I went until the end of an arc and stopped there. Once it's fully done then I will look into it again.

Kaze no Stigma apparently is terrible. I will probably watch it, but I'm skeptical about how good it might be.

Kenichi looks great. I think I already mentioned up above about it, but I will watch it.

Rosario + Vampire shall be watched.

School Rumble looks pretty great, reminds me of Cromartie High.

Tenchi Muyo looks good, but which one should I watch first? Seems like there is 3-4 starting points in the series.

Also I've already seen Daughters of Mnemosyne, it wasn't the best series. Cool concept, bad implementation.

Anyways, thank you for all the suggestions.

"Kaze no Stigma apparently is terrible..."

Says who? It's got a score of 7.4 on MyAnimeList.org.... Personally, I almost didn't watch it because the blurb didn't sound very appealing (it was on my "maybe" list for months), but the show actually turned out to be OK. On the surface, the anime seems very stereotypical, but the writing is actually better than it first appears. Considering how alike our tastes are in anime, I think you will be glad you decided to try it.

"Rosario + Vampire shall be watched."

Once you're done with the anime, check out the manga. I stopped following it after the second storyline finished, but I think there's going to be a third part (or already is one).

"Tenchi Muyo looks good, but which one should I watch first? Seems like there is 3-4 starting points in the series."

You can start with the original series, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki, but I started with Tenchi Muyo! GXP (chronologically after TMRO), and I think that was a good way to go about it. It really is up to you.

"Also I've already seen Daughters of Mnemosyne, it wasn't the best series. Cool concept, bad implementation."

You'll notice I didn't recommend that one to you. P

By the way, I think I should warn you about Sword Art Online; although it has action and romance and comedy within it, that's not what the anime is about. It's actually a social commentary on the nature of human beings and the impact of online gaming on the human psyche. I tell you this because the writing gets a lot of flak from people who are too obtuse to understand it. While watching, you might consider the following:

"Some will argue that the choices we make within a gameworld are arbitrary and therefore not indicative of our personalities. Is it not the case, however, that such choices are themselves a reflection of our innermost selves? At what point, then, does our nature dictate the behavior we exhibit within an imaginary world despite all our attempts to defy it?"

Comment has been collapsed.

I've heard from other people that it was a pretty mediocre show. I'll probably try it out, but after some of the other series that were posted in the thread.

I might check out the Rosario manga, depends on how good it is.

I'll probably watch it in chronological order then. Some series are way better if you watch it in a different order, but if it doesn't matter then it's often best in the order they were released.

As for SAO, I have seen the first season. There is a lot more to it than just action and romance, but it still gets flak since people dislike all the filler of season 1. If they focused more on the main storyline and fleshed out the interactions between the characters better, it would have gone better overall. I can't comment on season 2, although I'll eventually get around to watching it.

That was kind of my point. There is no "filler" in Sword Art Online, neither in Season 1 nor Season 2. People just don't understand how the various story arcs are related to the main theme (or don't even know what the main theme is). In Season 2, it is even more difficult to comprehend what the writer is doing if you haven't already figured it out. I know because I got "lost" in Season 2 myself and spent two or three episodes going "WTH?" It wasn't until later that I realized how the "weird, throwaway scenes" were actually integral to the narrative theme. They might have been edited to shave off 5-10 seconds each, but they still had to be in there.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, in season 1 there is a bunch of scenes that are from book 8 or so, they were all just flashbacks that weren't part of the original story. People don't really like it because there is a disconnect between these stories and the main plot. They may flesh out the story and the characters, but they don't actually flow properly with each other. If there wasn't such a disconnect between the stories, then it would have been much better.

Of course, I haven't watched SAO in a while, so I could also just be horribly wrong. This is just what I remember

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's the problem with the manga format; you can't really go back and "fix" your writing once it's already been published. Ordinary authors can rip out entire pieces of their book if they decide to change things, later, but a manga writer has to find other ways to edit and change the storyline. At least with an anime following on behind the manga there's the opportunity to build in consistency and/or smooth over the large potholes left from one's past writing.

Of course, there's no guarantee that a follow-up anime will adhere to the original writing at all, so the end result can be even more frustrating for the writer than if things were just left alone. P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Very true. Well, I would have been happier if they fit the individual stories into the overall plot a little bit smoother. I do like how they added in the introduction of the world, but it was just too disjointed to fully fit.

They should have maybe just let the main author write in a fully original arc. It could cover the same issues, but with a lot more detail and with a more continuous storyline.
