So what is your relationship with achievements?
I occasionally like collecting playstation trophies in a game i enjoy, but other than that i don't really worry about them.

i like getting all of them and sometimes i go off road to get them but i am not crazy about it and its really really weird that i do a second run on a game to get achivments

Achievements actively ruin my life to a point where I have started to look at the achievements list before purchasing a game. If the game has lots of achievements that require stupid tasks then I simply won't play it at all. Examples of stupid tasks would be: kill 1000 enemies with each weapon, or separate achievements for finishing the game on different difficulties. I have couple games that have achievements just like that and it's absolutely terrible. I suppose things like those wouldn't be bad if you really loved the game, but in these cases I really don't. It's not that I'd want to get all the achievements, it's just an issue where I can't... just not get them. I have issues with things being left unfinished/incomplete.
Right now on Steam I have unlocked 954 achievements.

Yeah, some games are (thank lord!) like that, but then there are some that require you to play separately the game through with each difficulty. Those are the ones that give me gray hairs, because just my luck, I have those more than the more forgiving ones, haha!

I feel your pain! I'm just the same. "Oh, this is a great game! Let's see achievements... What, only 0,01% of players have all chivs? Nope, saving money!"
Almost cried with Deponia's Droggeljugg (play the whole game with every word being "Droggeljugg") since I already hated the endless wandering back and forth and the conversations where you had to choose every option... Good thing the complete version doesn't have that! XD
Now my nemeses are some multiplayer chivs like "win against 100 different people" and "win against much stronger players". I don't like multiplayers and my internet is bad. -.-

Good lord, that sounds like a terrible achievement... I think my worst single player game as far as the achievements go is Duke Nukem Forever. It has chivs for different difficulty level completion, same for the DLC campaigns, and then one for carrying a real weak weapon through the entire game... So much replaying, nooo!
Multiplayer games are the real pain, agreed. TF2 and L4D(and probably L4D2 in the future) are games I actually like playing, but I got stuck with Orion: Prelude. I got that game in my library before it had achievements, didn't really care for it, and now it has 250 achievements that I am obligated to get... And most of the achievements are like this: "Kill 100 enemies with [weapon] -> Kill 500 enemies with [weapon] -> Kill 1000 enemies with [weapon]" and there are like 30 different weapons, argh!

Not a completionist here, not hunting them, what comes around is taken thru regular playing and for the rest, they may be achieved in another session some time later or maybe not.

I would really like an OPTIONAL achievement unlock sound notification in Steam.

No no, in addition! :) Like on the Xbox 360, if you know the system.

I would go for something more... steamy, like a valve release sound or something. I also understand a number of people would just hate it, hence the stress on "optional".

I love steam achievements. But because I love Europa Universalis IV too much, I don't have time to play other games.
Currently have 71 perfect games. :D

most of those games are completed in less than 2 hours. :)

What's your relationship with chivs? - Obsession.
I am known to not only play, but to buy, a game solely on the premise it has achievements. And there are games I've bought and not played at all before abandoning them only because 100% is impossible.
That being said, in theory, I do play games without chivs, and I don't necessarily feel bad for abandoning a game without 100%. It all depends on the type of the game and the chivs.
I currently have 552, all since Nov 26th 2015.
... okay, maybe had like 10 from CIV V before that.

Yeah, I'm not gonna play through something I don't enjoy either. But for whatever reason, I've made some really solid purchases and actually will (would like to) play every game I have. At least to see what they are like. F.ex. I've got some free GA games I wasn't particularly interested in yes, Dead Bits, Omicron, Walden but since I haven't really played similar games, it's an easy way to see what they're like. Maybe I'll love those, who knows.
I have found out though that having and hunting chivs makes playing more enjoyable. You always have something to look forward to, some idea what you could do next and so on. They kinda pace the experience more. :)
Of course, if the experience is really not happening, I doubt any chivs help. Back when I hadn't heard about Steam (not sure if it even existed), I bought Myst IV and oh boy was I disappointed. That I probably wouldn't have played even with the chivs...

I try to be an achievement hunter but I tend to play multiplayer games a lot even when I've already gotten all achievements so I don't necessarily grow my repertoire :P
Also some games I doubt I'll ever bother with achievements for like Guns of Icarus. Other games the multiplayer is dead so I'm missing those achievements.
My current stats are: 3,261 Achievements | 52 Perfect Games | 50% Average Completion Rate
At least on Steam games :P

I like achievements when they give a game I like a few more goals, like with Terraria, even though I finished it I can always come back to get some obscure goals. Although at this point it's just a few tedious achievements left. 200 quests for the fisherman? Really? That's 200 day/night cycles, each being 24 minutes, that's 80 hours at least, during which I have to constantly run around the map and catch fish and bring it back, which also requires resources for the bait and once every 7 days you can skip to the end of the day, but that doesn't help much considering there are also invasions and other crap that interferes with fishing every now and then. There are plenty of games with way harder things to do, but still.

I usually just play the game and see what I get. After I finished I might check to see if there are some that are doable and don't take a lot of time. The only games I want to 100 % are LEGO games (but those are pretty easy to get all achievements if you 100 % the game anyway).

They wanted to add achievements to dota2 once... God, soo good they haven't done that. Can't play more than I already do.
But in those little point&clicks or hog's? I could go for them ;3
Shame that achievements just simply don't work in some of the games. I will play Edna & Harvey or Wakfu when it gets fixed... Promise!

Almost 4500 of them and 39 perfect games, I lost I Zombie recently.... But I stay away from VN and demo that only takes 5 minutes to 100%, I don't see the point in doing these.
On your first post you talk about SAM, if you like achievement hunting, never use it.

It's a website following your achievement progress where you can compare yourself on a general level, on a single game if you want to, or even on a single achievement, compare yourself to other players, there's plenty of leaderboards and stats on this website. Each achievements are separated in different categories (common, uncommon, rare, epic) depending on their rarity. Also from there you can easily keep track of which games added achievement, fixed or broke achievements, you can request achievement guides and lots of different stuff. If you like achievement hunting, or just like stats and leaderboard i recommend you to check it out.

I categorize my steam games into five categories, two of which revolve around achievements
Trial, for stuff that I haven't ever touched.
Ignore, for games that I'll never play again.
Mediocre, for games that I might go back to at some point.
Favorites, for games that I enjoy so much that I want to get 100% in them
Beaten, for games that I have 100% in
Currently, my library is roughly 47% trial, 32% ignore, 13% mediocre, 6% favorites, 2% beaten. Assuming the trial section eventually shakes out into about the same proportions, I guess it's fair to say that I care about achievements in the best 15% or so of games and don't care about them otherwise. But in that 15%, I will go back for the achievements and get all of them.

7.534 Achievements - 189 Perfect Games - 42% Avg. Game Completion Rate
I might have a problem as well. :)

One perfect game... which has one achievement for finishing the game :)
Quite like the CS:GO ones that push you to messabout with random weapons, there's a few funny ones but beyond that shrugs Just got a few on Democracy for building a nice Socialist place with no debts, felt all happy and genius for a while before getting assassinated by Christian terrorists despite they fact they knew about my Steam achievements. Ungrateful bastards tbh, so really they can fuck off.

I only play for all the achievements if I really like the game, as a way to show my appreciation for the game I guess? At the moment I am trying to get all the achievements for Valkyria Chronicles, it is frustrating how long it is taking me. I know achievements are rather pointless yet I can't help myself :(

Do you like them? or do they destroy your life? :-P
And how much did you already achieved on STEAM? (at the moment im on 1682)
Edit 1: i will try to answer all comments (i do read them all), if i miss few dont be mad....im doing my best here ^_^
Edit 2: i read in a lot of the comments about bugs and achievement synchronizing problem...any way you can use Steam Achievement Manager to delete/open achievement on steam (http://gib.me/sam/) just dont abuse it ^_^
ohh and dont use it on multi games with servers (like TF2 or CSGO) you will probably get vac for it... it should be safe on normal single player games (with no multiplayer)
