Here we go, I'll start.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10

I Am a Hero
Manga adaptation.
Fairly good budget, with actual practical effects, instead of the usual cgi crap.
Strong first act. Doesn't really lose me after that, like i said it's pretty graphic, with good practical effects.Even if it turns to a generic zombie flick.
7/10

2019: After the Fall of New York
The definition of fun.
This movie goes places, without never really knowing what is going on.
Full of action, sweet 80s synth music, bad dubbing...and no idea of what it wants to be.
Some dude really liked Escape From New York and Mad Max and decided to blend both into one movie...and to be fair, who doesn't?
The result is a lack of consistency, with different themes crossing over each other.
Not a problem for me, i like the obvious reminder i'm watching a bad movie.
7.5/10

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
At Least Bay is learning how not to piss people up.
Everything he has done wrong in the past with crap like Pearl Harbor, he just simply avoided even trying.
It's just like Peter Berg´s Lone Survivor or Ridley Scott´s Black Hawk Down
overly glorified action scenes, without being presumptuous, , politically driven or down right racist.
Idk, i thought the fight and cinematography where solid.
At some point, Bay just intentionally starts looking for ways to create explosions, which do nothing for me, but whatever...dude really loves sunsets, titties and explosions.

Didn't like it either. Politically driven, biased and afraid of showing the real man

12 Angry Men
Not the one from the 50s, instead The William Friedkin movie. Director of sorcerer and Exorcist.
Im not that into the 50s stuff, Friedkin at least i know to be a fantastic director.
courtroom drama, set entirely in one room, where you look through the facts and story from the 12 Citizens point of view.
Aside from that, the characters and story are incredibly predictable, in a 50s kind of way. Yet the movie as a certain fluidity and i found myself glued to the screen, for its entire duration.
7.5/10
The Handmaiden
Erotic thriller, from Park Chan-wook, director of Mr. Vingança and Oldboy
Some scoundrel convinced 2 women, wanting a way out from their present life, into exploiting one another other.
with Gorgeous cinematography as per usual.
I would really recommend it, though of course the Lesbian scenes and the love for Japanese Porn, might trow some people off.
it's reflected in its entirety, not just in its story, but literature and set design
This one is going to be part of my collection. It will sit perfectly well with David Lynch, Verhoeven and some Japanese movies like Air Doll...weird collection i know.

The 7 magnificent, the last one. I'ts really bad, empty, superficial, dumb.
Blood Father, quite tipical and even foreseeable, yet it gives exactly what it sells, so at the end, it works. It's also good to se Mel Gibson back without any black lists (although "Get the Gringo" was really really REALLY funny)

Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) - Thought it would've been good considering it was directed by Mike Flanagan; I was mistaken.

How many movies did he direct this year?

He wrote & directed 3 this year, according to IMDb. Ouija, Hush & Before I Wake. I enjoyed Hush & Before I Wake. They were good, but not on the same level as Absentia.

What We Do in the Shadows - a comedy / mocumentary about four vampires living in Zew Zealand as flatmates, with their daily problems - how to be sure they have a great style to pick up some girls (for feeding purposes) if they can't see themselves, arguements between eachother if they have hundreds of years in age difference, and coping with the modern world. Check out it's trailer if you're interested, it really captures the movie's style - and I really, really liked it, a refreshing, peaceful funny movie that's a different take on the vampire tropes :)

Don't Breathe maybe best horror\triller of 2016.

Comment has been collapsed.

I just finished watching this. I'd have to disagree with it being the best horror of 2016. It doesn't even come close to being among the good. Where's the horror? It completely misses the basics of what makes a good horror movie. How it even managed to get such a high rating is laughable.

Sorry to ask, but how did it missed the basics of what makes a horror movie. If it follows rules of the teen slasher era?

Spectral
Utterly forgettable militaristic sci-fi that's low on science and high on technobabble. Stop me if you've heard this before:
Soldiers encounter a new type of thread (here: ghostlike beings), sciency guy gets brought in to help find origin of said ghosts, mystery gets solved and threat gets stopped admit a flurry of embarrassing plotholes, America saves the day!.
4/10

Usually goes by: team of sciency people are gathered by the government that somehow always require a mathematician and a genius who decided he wanted a regular everyday job, and some guy with a weird job everyone thinks is useless.
The smart guy is usually bitter.
Sometimes we are the monsters

And "we come in peace line"

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, that about sums it up. Just replace mathematician by engineer/designer of military equipment (despite not liking weapons.)

And the "we come in peace" line gets skipped here, as it's already part of the setting/background (A US military operation is already in full swing to help stabilize a country in revolt, by stamping out remnants of the previous government)

Oh, and I forgot the mention of Big Explosions around the half-way point and during the finale, as expected for the type of movie.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) - This movie was pretty damn good. It had me hooked until the end. If you like your horror movies, I recommend giving this one a go.
Now to watch Don't Breathe (2016) & Blair Witch ( 2016 ).

Yeah, saw Autopsy too and loved it. The director's previous movie, Trolljegeren, is my favorite found-footage movie.

The Finest Hours
If you didn't know this was a Disney movies, you will be aware quite fast.
They pretty much made a reenactment of how these people dealt with the problem.
The very little development was spent to give most of the characters a one dimensional personality
Its not bad if you are trying to relax at home
5.5/10
Neon Demon
I Felt like watching it again.
Just so i won't go along on the negative critics path, i just want to mention how neat it is, that half the characters are are a representation of beauty standards, while the other half are different possible paths our lead may take
7/10
Lethal Weapon
First time watching it. Pretty much on pair with Die Hard.
Actually maybe slightly better, because Die Hard didnt had a Sweet Saxophone making every scene more sexual than it should have been.
8.5/10
War Dogs
It's uneventful, that's a real problem.
Somehow i expected Lord of War meets hangover.
4/10
Cop Land
It's great, it's a good vehicle for Stallone. I mean real acting not his usual "legend" stuff, which i love but still...
The biggest sin of the movie, is not spending that time with the other actors. When you have Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro, It's a huge mistake not to give them the same treatment.
8/10
Star Trek Beyond
Best movie in the trilogy. I like the subtle writing, Makes Krall´s plan and motives furthermore intriguing.
Direction is weak...i just kinda looked at the pretty effects
7/10
The Shallows
Oh boy...The very accurately named Sony Picture, Shallows.
A movie about Blake Lively's body, That gets stranded on a rock, near the beach.
She makes friends with a Seagull, which i'll tell you right away, it's the smartest thing you will see in this movie.
So yeah, it's clearly a Castaway reference, and audience already named him Steven Seagull.
So, Jaws appears out of nowhere, probably from the Jaws IV set, considering how unconvincing it is.
Trust me, it's dumb. But not action dumb like "Jaws" or "Orca", it's actually slow paced "Open water" except the animal is a serial killer and the main character survives through the power of plot convenience.
Good movie to watch with friends and a couple beers
1/10

Lethal Weapon 2
Now That Martin Riggs Struggles with depression have been explored in the first movie, the dark tone gets replaced with a more humor oriented , one liner action fest.
It's a different direction, but still filled with great scenes.
It could be as good as the original if it had gotten rid of Joe Pesci character, and of course more saxophone wouldn't hurt either
8/10
Kingsman: The Secret Service
Well, i dont think its anything special in regards to the writing, it is incredibly predictable in fact.
But it as good things going for it. especially for me, i'm a sucker for any movie who directs action scenes to follow the pace of a pop culture song.
Style over substance
7/10
Deadpool
Not much to say. There is a deep understanding of what the character is about.
Independently of the scale or predictable story, it already has enough for a good movie
7.5/10
No Escape
There is nothing here.
Futuristic prison with Ray Liotta switches set for a remote island, for the lack of budget or most likely effort.
It's not awful, there's just nothing to say about it
3/10
Home for the Holidays
Jodie Foster directed this christmas movie.
It's actually believable drama, with the usual dysfunctional family getting together around the holidays, it did make me chuckle a couple of times.
At some point i even started to accept Steve Guttenberg in it. Because at least he was the ignored character by the family and forgotten by the movie.
Yeah, i dont like him. He is terrible in this as well

The last movie I saw in cinema was Star Wars Force Awakens. I was bummed out by it as it was exactly the same as everything else we already saw. Not really anything new.

The last movie I saw on tv? I don't remember, all the movies they show on tv pretty much suck. It's all the same mindless violence or romcom.

The Ides Of March (2011) - Very good political drama directed by George Clooney and staring Clooney, Ryan Gosling and Philip Seymour Hoffman. If you liked House of Cards series you will like this movie as well. 8/10

Ratatouille (2007) - Very good animated movie about a rat who is on a quest to become a chef. 8/10

A Christmas Carol (2009) - Great animated movie based on Dickens' novel. Animation wasn't great but the plot and the way it was shown were amazing. Best moral of the story in the history of Disney movies (not thanks to them though but to Charles of course). 9/10

Mission: Impossible (1996) - Great action/crime type of movie. Classic at this point. 9/10

Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) - Second installment in the series is different than the first one. More asianesque, probably because it was directed by John Woo. I liked it very much even though very often it's ridiculous and extremely unrealistic. 8/10

Mission: Impossible 3 (2006) - One of my favorite action movies ever created. Everything is great in this part of the series. Plus Philip Seymour Hoffman was amazing as a villain. 10/10

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011) - The next installment in the series is great but not as great as the third one. The villain was weak and there were too many unrealistic scenes. Still, tons of fun. The Dubai segment was perfect. 9/10

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015) - As good as the third one. Pretty much flawless. Strongly recommended. 10/10

Swiss Army Man (2016) - I watched this without watching the trailer or knowing anything about it. All I knew was that it had a decent rating and starred Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano. I can't recommend this movie and I can't not recommend it, all I can say is, WTF?

I thought it was a really immature and dumb movie for about the first hour and I almost turned it off a couple times, but I forced myself to keep watching because of the good reviews and then as I started getting deeper into the second half of the movie things started to make more sense and it became more interesting. In then end, I was left thinking WTF, but if you think about it for a bit, it does make sense and has some redeeming qualities.
