The only thing I pre-order are books on Amazon. Especially Limited Editions, for obvious reasons. I don't get whyone would pre-order a digital game. There's no shortage.

My expendable income is limited so sometimes I'll pre-order when I have a little extra so I know I won't have to miss a game down the line.

People do realize this is a six-year old thread recently necroed, right? But it's interesting, so let's go!
I have never pre-ordered a game because games are discounted quickly and many of the bugs are fixed (or balance changes made, etc.).
Hmm, unless you consider Kickstarter a pre-order (which I don't, because it isn't). I've backed nine games, eight of which have been released, and played three of those.

Almost never :O
I broke this rule of mine only a couple of times:
Did not regret anything, but I'm still waiting for the stories to continue.... xD

Back in the early 90s I pre-ordered many, but only a few since 2000. These were:
For me it was the right decision in each case. Cyberpiuk 2077 might be the next one, I'll decide this weekend.
All stated games above were physical editions and Cyberpunk 2077 would be too, if I'll do it.

The closest I've come to such a thing is a kickstarter pledge. It'll take me 2.5 years to get my goods, so I can't comment on the goods until then xD
The developers are reviving a title dear to my heart, Suikoden, and I really wanted to support them - it's also the first time I felt like doing so as well - with all the kickstarters that fail, I think it's a good thing to be selective - same goes for pre-orders. I've only ever known of Abyss Odyssey post release and the mixed reviews aren't encouraging, so I would prefer to wait for games to be released before buying in.
This entire early access, pre-order situation feels like it's just taking advantage of the customer in many cases - I can understand the logic they are selling but I really don't know how actionable it is to take community feedback "while developing" and "with a specified deadline". Even when these deadlines are delayed (and expected) it really doesn't account for live taking in feedback to tweek, in many cases.
edit: I just noticed this but...was this thread necro'ed? xD

no its useless for me..in the old non digital times it made more sense, today mostly its better to wait... game will be more polished later and most pre-order bonuses are sold later separately..and game will be much cheaper.

Well, yes. Not exactly a preorder, but a KS pledge. For the game Monster Camp (sequel of Monster Prom).
It is still not out, but the beta was amazing and I am sure the game will be even better <3

I gifted Cyberpunk and Vampire The Masquerade 2 to myself for my birthday, but eventually refunded the latter. There's also Kickstarter, of course, but that's a whole another story.

Well I haven't preordered any games for me till now, but I once created a GA for Cyberpunk 2077 for an event just because I was celebrating the new year 2077 as per our country's calendar.
I think that will be the last preorder I ever did.unless some game with matching year title gets announced XD

In general I do not bc I have been burned a few times. Most but not all of that is from a long time ago and related to people initially promising that "Linux will be supported" and then not keeping their word once they have the money or doing a half-ass job on that side of things. I would rather that they are up-front and just say they don't know then take my money and not deliver.
These days that kinda thing probably wouldn't be an issue due to Proton but there was a time when it was much more of an issue. The only one in recent memory that I can think of is the Pathfinder: Kingslayer (via kickstarter), I had opted for the GOG version at the time and it did have a DLC version but for several months after release I was told (by GOG) that the pre-purchase dlc stuff was only available on Windows. Not sure if they ever fixed it, I may give it another go at some point but I know if I do and still have issues, I will be wishing that I had opted for getting a steam key instead of a GOG one.

Lol, who necro'd a 6 year old thread? If OP is still an active member of SG they are going to be very startled by the sudden influx of messages. Since it is an interesting topic, I'll join in anyway ;-)
I can't remember ever pre-ordering a game specifically. I have occasionally kickstarted one (looking forward to Pathfinder: WotR!), or been part of beta testing one (back before EA meant paying full price for an incomplete and sometimes never released game). Tbf, I usually don't play games on release day anyway these days; I usually wait at least a day or two for the initial bugs to be worked out by the developers (or modded away by players in the case of Bethesda lol).

Looks like the guilty party is on page 6, but since I agree on the topic being interesting, I'll add my two cents games.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider; because I enjoyed the first two.
Kill it With Fire, but only by a couple days (after trying both demos).

I preorder all the time, there have only been two games that I preordered that I haven't been satisfied with. The first being what is now known as "Kingdom Wars" I played the beta when it was called "Dawn of Fantasy" and it was a super fun game with a ton of high expectations that they didn't deliver when the game finally came out. They ended up releasing new games instead of trying to fix the broken mess.
Credit to the devs though, they support their supporters and actually gave a key for their next game, but I had sunk a ton of time and money into the first one that I hoped would be fixed and not just abandoned.
The second pre-order that I was dissatisfied with was The Guild 3. The game has come a long way since it went into EA, but it still feels like it has a ways to go before it even catches up to it's predecessors in The Guild 2: Renaissance. Thankfully it's not like I have to buy the game again, with some more updates I'm sure it'll come around to being awesome. Just sucks playing the waiting game for it.
Other than that I've preorderd a bunch and have had some bugs here and there and crashes, but the total experience is worth it. The biggest gripe I have is when content is locked behind preorders. I may want to wait and see if your game is any good before I go and drop money on it...

...and if so, did you like the outcome? The only game I ever pre-ordered was Abyss Odyssey (and I still didn't have time to try it), anything that ACE Team does is an insta-buy for me and I want to support them as a studio.
