Hey all, was wondering what you think the best choice for concealed carry would be. I currently own a Beretta 92FS but it's just not comfortable for concealed carry for me personally. I am 6'0 185 lbs muscular.

I was thinking of the M&P Shield or LC9s, I've been hearing good things about it. I am still new to the world of firearms and self-defense, so guns better suited for new users would be appreciated, I've been out to the range with a friend of mine about 4-5 times and he let me shoot a bunch of different guns, since the rise of Black Lives Matter and the huge influx of illegal aliens and Islamic migrants into the US in recent years, just don't feel safe anymore, especially if I am out with my girlfriend and some of her gfs, I don't feel confident enough to protect everyone without a firearm, especially if there are armed / multiple assailants.

Please only responses from US citizens who own/carry, or armed forces/law enforcement (basically people who know what's up)* I know there is much fearful anti-gun sentiment out there today, just please respect my decision to not allow myself to be a helpless victim and to protect those I love and cherish. Thank you.

I have an M&P Compact in .40 S&W.

It's a solid piece. The Shield is thinner, being single-stack. Assuming other qualities are similar, it's got a comfortable trigger pull, and I like that I don't have to dry fire to disassemble.

It wasn't terribly comfortable to carry when I had to for a job, but as I mentioned the Shield is single-stack and so thinner.

Whoa there. I'm honestly not going to read through most of these comments, knowing that I will more than likely be fairly perturbed by them, but I personally carry a 1911. It's a bit bulky, but the biggest thing for me was a comfortable holster. I like an inside the waistband in the small of my back unless I'm driving, then it's moved to my side. I found a hybrid holster to be most comfortable, so part kydex, part leather, or at least a kydex with a felt backing. I think i have an (alien gear?) holster that I like a lot, and a friend made me one that I use most often. Make sure to get yourself a lot of training. I'm a certified Range Safety Officer, as well as instructor. You should feel completely comfortable with any firearm you have. Personally, I like my students to be able to take apart and put back together any firearm as a first step, then plenty of regular practice before they carry.

Why is being able to take the gun apart and re-assemble it necessary? Honest question. I see movies where people do it blindfolded and timed as fun competition. I have seen movies where people take them apart to clean them. But is this necessary? Just curious.

actually, it is important to know your weapon. weapons do have lots of moving parts that should be known by owner, because maintenance is part of handling any firearm. you are the one who disassemble to lubricate, you are the one who identify any problem at first sight (to aquire new parts) and things related to "general maintenance". the competitions themselves are just a fun part of the war field. quick maintenance was kinda a survival thing there (as much as running, for example), that later became a sport. (edit: fixes of my shitty english xD)

Well you could always just go hit a plumbing supply store and grab some wires from broken electronics and make a "pipe bomb". OK it won't work and you may go to jail for a few years but if you REALLY want to show your GF what type of person you are, nothing says "please don't have my babies" like trying to out thug the thugs around you.

Now if you really want to get something: Canik TP-9 / TP-9SA or Glock 17 / 19. I would always rather have an underpowered sidearm that will never jam, is highly durable and "relatively" inexpensive than a sign that I'm unhappy with the size of my anatomy (cough Desert Eagle owners cough).

However, if you are going to be silly and paranoid, please at least get some serious training on how to use the firearm. You are much more likely to hurt yourself or somebody you love than ever going to need to pull it for protection. OK plead for intelligence over.

Anybody else have a legitimate opinion on cost vs quality in the sub $500 us sidearms market?

If you want a gun for self defense why do you search for concealed carry stuff????
Isn´t it better to keep your gf and loved ones away from locations where you might need a gun to protect them?
Buy your gf some flowers and chocolade instead and be safe without a gun :-)

Honestly, I doubt that people in Sandy Hook thought they needed guns, but they did. An elementary school is not normally the type of place that one expects there to be a shooter. I don't carry, but I can certainly understand those who do.

And unaccompanied women shouldn't go out in bars where they might be taken advantage of.

You want to know what's the best defense?

Give your stuff to the assailant, no questions asked, no provocations. Don't look at his face, and just hold your hands up.

He will not have a reason to kill you, because he will go in a world of shit if the thief has killed somebody.

I know you want to defend yourself, but what if you fail to pull your gun up? Are you gonna risk yourself with the possibility that everything will go down to the shitter?

Yeah, this is definitely the best thing to do if you're being robbed, regardless of whether you conceal carry or not. Your life is always worth more than your wallet. There are some situations though, such as an active shooter, or a break in to your home, where owning a firearm could mean the difference between life and death. You should be well trained however; not just in shooting but how to respond to various situations. Owning a firearm is a responsibility not to be taken lightly.

While I enjoy shooting firearms at a range, I do not think I'd be able to kill a human being unless it's was a "myself+family/others or them" situation. The only reason why I would consider owning a firearm is for shooting at a range and home protection. I also do not think I'd be able to carry one on me at all times because I'd be afraid that everyone near me would be trying to take my weapon.

To answer your question, I've heard that Glocks and M&P Shields are some of the best.

Device messed up and the deleted comments are probably mined. Sorry for multiposting.

I suggest you get an assault rifle because honestly pistols are for pussies and have pretty low fire rate and number of bullets in a single clip. Assault rifle can mow any alien down and you will most likely have lot of bullets for collateral damage such as innocent civilians or animals, and since you're not black or muslim, you have great options after defending yourself.

I don't know, I'm not French and I don't watch football (I assume you're talking about football, I don't really watch sports on TV). But a vast majority of mexicans are really nice people, so I wouldn't mind having more around, and why not play football with them :p

Anyway, it was an attempt at humor, I live in France and the way the refugee crisis is handled in Europe is nothing to be proud of either, we all have problems ;)

If you don't feel safe then perhaps you should look around and reconsider where you are or the kinds of places that you are going to. I am a US Citizen in New York and I have never felt the need to carry a firearm since I avoid seedy places. Anyway, this is not really the place for such a discussion.

A lot of people do not have the luxury to avoid seedy places because that is the location in which some people live or have to travel through in order to go to work

Arming oneself and escalating the situation is not the solution. No more than it was for the United States and Soviet Union to engage in The Cold War. It's a wonder that we didn't kill ourselves or each other. As far as I am concerned civilians cannot be trusted with making responsible and ethical decisions when it comes to possession of a lethal weapon like a firearm at any time and at any place. Something can and will go wrong sooner or later or something foolish will be done. If you don't feel safe in the environment where you live then leave. This is the Unites States, no one will stop you from going wherever you want. The only thing that escalating the situation does is make it more likely that something ugly will happen that ends up in the news.

With all my experience, I can recommend any small weapon... by small, I refer weapons that are smaller than your hand oppened. But before choose, I really recommend you deeply check some things... You first need to check if you want a revolver or a pistol. The revolver is better to quick reaction and it gives almost zero problems in a dangerous situation. The pistol, in the other hand, needs practice and knowledge about the weapon because moving parts. The moving parts can get stuck in a dangerous situation that may requires lots of practice to identify and solve the problem in time. Considering that concealed carry is for dangerous situation, you always need to have in mind how many bullets you have available. Only practice will tell you how many bullets you'll need in a dangerous situation. About pistols, I recommend you weapons with a longer barrel inclination (to place better the bullet in the barrel), because most concealed pistols have a very short barrel entrance that tends to stuck the bullet in the wrong position. Also check how good the grip is for your hands... this is important on small weapons. About revolvers, I recommend you the one with less bullets. The cylinder capacity is proportional to the revolver size. In the end, after you choose, you always need to have in mind that you don't use your concealed weapon if you have to aim. Any inclination (even the little ones) in short barrels will make you miss your targed. Considering all this, you can choose any weapon that the brand/factory don't have any damaged reputation (like taurus in brazil, because owners always express the quality of their products on Internet).
