Seeing a large surge of people going "Omg only $30 CV WAI ;____:", it reminded me of when I was stupid like that, too. I wanted to see how many of the forum-goers HONESTLY didn't know all of the rules and/or broke some. I still expect to see people go "Well I read the FAQ as soon as I joined because I'm a competent blah blah blah", but I wanna see the truth. As for me: I didn't know about the FAQ until having the used the site for about 2-3 months. Here's every rule that I broke:

  • Winning multiple copies of one game
  • Regifting
  • Necro'ing

And of course, I got suspended for a whopping 2 weeks, and basically vowed to never come back. That didn't work out xD. I was also tempted to make a thread about my CV not working right. I had about $55 CV, and after having given away a second copy of The Ship, I had noticed that my CV hadn't gone up. I was going to ask in a thread, having noted I had seen people's CV break at $30 all the time, but then decided to just ask someone in the group I was in at the time. At least I had given away non-bundle games too, eh?

Now it's your turn. Tell us your story

i read the rules before i posted or even entered/gave away.
Really dont know why people cant be bothered to read the rules of a community they wish to join.

Eh, I know I broke some rules before reading the FAQ. I just don't remember what rules.

Eh, don't remember when I read them, but it definitely wasn't any time soon after joining the site. Keeping track of the forum and using common sense pretty much made them obvious. Of course, this was before contributor-only giveaways were even introduced so having common sense then was much easier. :D

I did, however, learn the unspoken rule of not making suggestions just because I thought they were a good idea without thinking of how people can abuse them to cause chaos. ^_^'

When I joined, I was more puzzled about this "bundle" classification of games! Turns out you can get 4 to 5 games for $1, hehe

That actually compelled me look at the FAQ, cause I knew there had to be some rules in place to counter such exploits! So no.....fortunately I was never as uninformed as those $30 CV thread starters! XD

+1 I thought Humble Indie Bundle 1 was the only bundle to ever exist before coming across SG.

I read the rules as soon as I joined. I tend to look through the giveaway rules as well everytime I make one. I don't wanna sound like the typical goody two-shoes but I'd hate to be the "oh wat? banned why? i only sold my gift that i won huehuehueuhe".

Hrm, read the rules at the start but it sounded like a scam so I didn't make any giveaways. Decided it was real after winning some ubi.com exploit dlc - if it were fake they'd have told me I just won a Skyrim. :)

I've honestly never read through them properly (Bad, I know!), I've just learnt from others mistakes that I see posted with comments saying to not do that really and as well as using what common sense I have.

i didint read them, i pretty much apply most of my common sense and saw how other people who broke rules.

however i was ignorant of 1 rule, the whining , and i made a thread whining why i coulnt win saints row 3 with all those giveaways, didint got me banend but it sure made me get excluded from some giveaways.

also necroing but that was because i forgot to check the date of the last post, but was not really on purpose

When I joined I read the main rules but not the whole FAQ. Before I had a chance to formulate any questions that would have been answered by the FAQ though, I learned it all through just lurking on the forums. But when I did have a question I always looked in the FAQ or searched first.

I actually did read the rules first but still got suspended because I posted a Bioshock Infinite spoiler in the forum and apparently it violated the "Be considerate to others" rule. 1 week suspension for that.

I think I violated that rule again in the SG chat so now I'm banned from it. :/ Now where am I going to drop keys?

Oh right...here...

Dino D-Day
Steam Key:
4K390-GD7FQ-Z0N30

Sniper: Ghost Warrior Gold Edition
Steam Key:

Both keys are taken now, but thanks, in my eyes, you have redeemed yourself ;)
On the other hand, I'd be quite pissed if I had read that spoiler, whatever it was.

I don't think I've ever broken any of the rules... Though I did ask what happens if you do win multiple copies of a game after reading the FAQ a bit.

The very first thought that crossed my mind when I came to the site was something along the lines of "Wow, people selflessly giving gifts to strangers, there has to be a catch or something...this is just too cool to be true" and I subsequently went looking for something like a FAQ or "About Us" page to figure out how it all worked.

That being said, I did get suspended for posting referral links unknowingly (was just copying and pasting amazon links from a deal thread I saw without realizing what was going on, this got lifted once I talked to loko though) and any other suspensions I've gotten were due to intentionally breaking rules (calling devboosters begging pieces of shit for begging developers for games just to increase their CV and pointing out that a particular community member uses SAM to show off to the community)

Took me about 10 minutes after joining to read the rules. I re-read them when I made my first giveaway. I never understood people who for one reason or another couldn't be bothered to take 2 minutes to read a forum/sites rules. Boggles my mind.

I lurked for awhile before my first giveaway so by the time I did one, I knew the rules. Bless you, forum-goers, for preventing me from looking like a ding dong.

That's why I always try to be nice to people who post the $30 CV threads or the dumb questions. Seriously though, best advice for new people (to any website!): LURK MOAR. ;)

I read the rules before I joined but didn't fully understand the part about calling out giveaways at first so there's probably a giveaway out there from my first month that I've said fake in. :p

how is winning the same game an offense?

lets say you want a the game F.E.A.R.3 and you wanna increase your chance of winning it, over winning something else... ofc you will join a couple of giveaways for the same game.... and then what you get super lucky and all of the sudden you are violating rules?

wat

I won a DLC twice, one right after another. I didn't have time or the ability to remove my entry in the other DLC giveaways because the site was down and they happened right after one another. Once I realized what happened, I contacted support and one of the giveaway creator to reroll.

The first $25 worth of bundle games you give out are counted, for all intents and purposes, as non-bundle games. Any bundle games after that give you 20% of your value of non-bundle games, up to that game's store value.

So if you give away $40 worth of bundle games, $25 count as regular, and 20% of $25 is $5, and $5+$25= $30 CV total. If, after giving out $40 worth of bundle games, you give out a $10 non-bundle game, you will have $25+10 = $35 non-bundle games + (20% of $35 = $7 value from bundle games) and $35 + $7 = $42 CV total

If instead you give out a $100 non-bundle game and $40 worth of bundle games, you would get (100+25= $125) value of the games counted as non-bundle + (20% of $125 = $25) for a total of $150... however, because you've only given out $140 worth of games total, you're capped at 100% of the total value of the games, so you will have $140 CV (obviously giving out bundle games cannot get you more than 100% of the game's value).

Basically, the more non-bundle games you give away, the more value you get out of bundle games you give away, up to a maximum of 100%.

Math: it's what's for dinner.
