The most annoying thing about Steam for me is the inabiliy to effectivly sort your games. I could all be solved if they just added sub-groups....which shouldn't be hard at all to impliment

I dislike the automatic updating. Sure, you can turn it off on a game-by-game basis, but I can't bring myself to go through every single game I own, disabling the auto-updates. Being as I have a 5GB bandwidth cap, it gets super annoying.

Turning updates off takes forever, and Steam often completely ignores it anyway. Also, it occasionally switches updates back on spontaneously. It also switches updates back on every time you play the game. So it's just as well you never tried disabling updates on all your games because it wouldn't have helped.

It doesn't turn updates on when you play a game. At least not for me.

Automatic updates, lack of queuing downloads ability, broken backup feature (i cursed for a while after realizing i had to redownload The Witcher 2). Lack of currency adaptation for the audience outside of the US and UK, paying in dollars is pretty much impossible atm here.

That's a real pain, certain actions within steam (such as trading, accepting a gift, sometimes installing a game, or activating a key) can easily lock up Steam, which sometimes leads me to restart it. While in a trade or activating a key, it's definitely not something you wish happen, specially if the other person is then waiting for you to give them the key.

Having come from Xbox Live, from recently deciding that PC gaming is where it's at - the lack of a party chat style voice chat isn't so great. I tend to use skype with my friends but you can't invite randoms from your games into skype chat easily.

Still, I'd say the service beats XBL hands down!

Slow startup. I've never found a program that's as slow as Steam during start up. It hogs the entire system for real.

When I boot up Steam on my REALLY bad laptop, it boots up in for real 4 seconds.

I think Zero is talking about when you have Steam on autostart when you open your computer, there's these few minutes right after you enter your desktop when everything is slow as fuck. Like I can't even open a browser and have to wait until Origin, Steam, Gamestop, Raptr, and other shitty DRM programs also bootup.

I only allow Steam to start on boot. Origin, Ubisoft's store, etc I only open when I actually want to play a game that requires it.

I'll go with the fricking library games STUCK there because of free weekends!
I can't enter any L4D2 giveaways bc Steam wont do things right, I can't buy it because all the dollar 'witchhunt' here in Argentina, even PP doesn't work here and also that Steam doesn't give any other choise to activate Wallet system so I'm stuck like this, with f2p TF2 and such.
Yes, I know there are a couple of threads about the "cant enter giveaways as already-in-your-library" kind of posts. Rant over, thanks for the vent buddy :)

Backup the games folder minus what you dont want, uninstall steam, reinstall. Should fix the problem.

Thanks xBlack for your input, would love that to work, even with the bother of the process!
But hmm, that sounds good but I'd normally be skeptical about it since steam keeps reccord on cloud thing, so it wouldn't possibly matter what I did with the files. Other users said that if someone thinks that steam (and SG) checks your files/folder to let you in on giveaways, would be just plain wrong. SG asks steam what games do we have in our library, so only way I can get rid of L4D2 (and any other we don't want, for the matter) would be IF steam itself kick it out. Also read about waiting 2 weeks and sync again, but get this: by then all the giveaways and offers would be long gone! and that asumming it would work, which noone ever confirmed it.
Right now I have "licencia caducada" instead to "ready to play" which sucks cuz I can't buy it or trade it. Thank you "K" for ruining our little piece of heaven.. (you know what I mean).

I think that's one of the biggest pet peeves i have with Steam atm, being stuck with dollars, specially when it comes to some AMAZING sales i've seen as of lately. I wouldn't mind they charging a metric shit ton more if i paid in pesos, but at least i wouldn't have the credit card company up my ass everytime i do a dollar purchase.

hear hear buddy! I wouldn't mind it too! but we're left traying to convince someone else, outsider, to trade or buy for us, which brings the awful "begging" which I wont do. I don't want to pirate it either so I'm left for dead cof cof haha left without playing it! XD (gotta do it, forgive me) :D

Some games syncing to cloud is extremely slow. (I know you can turn it off if you please)

Also you should be able to defrag each game individually. Only some games allow you to. Laptop HDD too underpowered. Not going to get an SSD yet, need space can't duo.

You can actually brag about achievements on consoles and on steam they're completly useless, there's no motivation to collect them all.

The actual software itself. Steam is buggy, bloated, crappy, unstable, and lacking in basic features. And it forces you to use it. I really wish I could use external programs, like my IM client and Firefox or Chrome, in the Steam Overlay, because their web browser is terrible. Their IM client is also terrible, and lacks basic features like text formatting. And the Steam client itself is buggy and unstable and has a lot of random freezes and crashes for me.

I love their service to death, but the actual software itself is horrendously outdated and poorly optimized.

Edit: Oh yeah, and especially in the last year, I get random disconnects from Steam all the freaking time. It'll just suddenly lose connection for no apparent reason, and said disconnect can last seconds or hours.

Yeah that web browser and the limited chat options... those get under my skin. Glad they finally allowed for a limited form of chat history at least, that was so overdue.

You do understand that Steam now uses Webkit, the same rendering engine that underpins Chrome?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That doesn't mean it isn't buggy and unstable.

Judging by the replies in this thread and pretty much every friend I have who uses Steam, it is NOT just me that has issues with it.

Plus, it has an inexcusable lack of basic browser features.

The number of complaints I have about Steam could fill a freaking novel, so I'll just go with this: Valve needs to get its shit together and start forcing its programmers and designers to stick to specific projects. Part of the reason Steam is so bloated now is because of Valve's "work on what you want" philosophy.

Oh yeah, and the weirdly anti-consumer rules they keep adding to their ToS with every new update is driving me up the wall too.
