So I have been watching a lot of anime, and I have started to hit a brick wall. I don't really know what to watch, and I've already been through many of the top-ranked lists. So I thought that I would come to the wonderful people of SG for some help! Feel free to recommend some things, and a quick explanation of why people should watch it would be great!

I have a MAL list of all the things I have watched and what I rated them. Although it would be lovely to rewatch things I have already seen, it would be better to find new and exciting things to view.

Also I'm sure you all came in for the giveaways rather than out of the kindness of your heart. People who mention a show that I haven't watched and explain why I should watch it will be added to my whitelist. These lucky people will be allowed to join a bunch of bundle giveaways, and then will be promptly dropped from my whitelist after the giveaways finish. I might also be putting up an anime puzzle in here when I have the time, so even those who haven't watched anime but love to use their google-fu can enjoy.

Anyways, thank you for your assistance! Lets all enjoy anime together!

TLDR: Give me recommendations not on this list and explain why, I give you games and love.

EDIT: Wow, that was a large response. I'll try to get through everyone and respond to all of your posts, and then I'll whitelist everyone and create some giveaways. Check back in probably 5ish hours and I should have everything ready by then. Thanks for all of the support and recommendations!

EDIT2: After responding to four and a bit pages of recommendations, I need a break. I'll be back in an hour or so, hang tight. Giveaways should still be up when I said they would be, never fear.

EDIT3: Back for more commenting. Hopefully I can get to the bottom of this thread.

EDIT4: Finally made it to the bottom! I'll add everyone to my whitelist now and then post up the giveaways.

EDIT5: Whitelist giveaways are now up. They are all cheap bundle games, but I hope people still are interested.

EDIT6: Giveaways are over, and I'll be closing this thread. Thank you everyone for the suggestions!

I don't watch anime/I have no favorite

5 Centimeters Per Second is insanely good if you like a realistic depiction of love, though you may want to be careful since it can leave a sour taste in your mouth, especially if you do not like non happy ever after endings.

I see you watched Higurashi and Tatami Galaxy. Noice. Would have recommended those just because they are godly.

I'm surprised you haven't watched Rurouni Kenshin yet. Typical shounen kind of, but very well made and generally much better than most of its competition. If you decide to watch it, there are also two OVA's. I'd suggest watching Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal and to watch it before watching the main series. It is extremely good, probably one of the best anime OVA's out there. Call me biased, it just does everything right.

Usagi Drop - HOW SLICE OF LIFE SHOULD BE DONE. And yes, that needed to be said in caps. Watch it, love it.

Seirei no Moribito. While it can get slow at times, its so wonderfully done that you won't even care. Feudal times. A prince in danger. One bad ass female protagonist. Sweet.

Perfect Blue. An old school film about the troubles that a pop idol/actress faces in our society. Really well made.

Oh, and someone report dis guy for watching Queens Blade. kthxbye.

5 Centimeters Per Second is one I will be watching with friends. It looks good.

Rurouni Kenshin is one I was planning on watching, then my harddrive died and I never got back to it. I'll need to watch it and the OVAs.

Usagi Drop looks super cute. Definitely watching it, kinda reminds me of Yotsuba.

Seirei no Moribito is one I've already explained above.

Perfect Blue looks pretty cool, I've heard of it but never knew what it was about. I'll check it out.

Thanks for the suggestions

I'm probably late to the party, but I noticed you've seen LUCKY STAR!!! :D And Gunslinger Girl! GG was one of my favorites.

Anyway, I didn't see these on your list:

  1. Another

    • Another centers around the mysterious deaths of students at a Senior class in Yomiyama after a transfer student named Koichi befriends a quiet classmate named Mei. The show is pretty dark, similar to Higurashi, but at a slower pace. I found it to be quite gruesome at certain deaths, but also strangely comedic. The best comparison to this anime has been Final Destination in animated form. It's one to check out. :)
  2. Btoom!

    • Think Halo in real life and you will have Btoom! Basically, a group of very skilled FPS players are selected by the game's creator and taken to a remote island to compete for their lives in a real-life deathmatch. It's a medium paced story whch gives quite a bit of action and WTF moments. Truly shows you a scenario where your friends can become your biggest enemies when your lives each carry the same weight. Like Another, it's pretty dark.
  3. FullMoon wo Sagashite

    • I didn't see this on your lists, so I'll go ahead and recommend it because you've seen ChoBits which came out around the same time. FMoS is a story of a girl whose life dream is to sing on stage and be a pop star. Unfortunately, she has cancer and the only cure is to take out her vocal chords which would ruin her dreams. She is greeted by two shinigami (Angels of Death) who tell her she has one year left to live, and she makes a deal with them that if she can become a pop star before her year is up, she will go peacefully. It's a sad anime because it really makes you feel for the girl and her struggle. The music is good too. It's quite old (2003), but I still recommend it.
  4. Kikaider

    • Another oldie about an android whose master dies in an explosion, leaving the creation to fend for himself. Kikaider befriends his creator's children and they try to teach him the ways of life, although he's built for destruction and his 'instincts' get the best of him at times. Very similar to the later anime, Casshern Sins, but with less wandering around aimlessly.
  5. Log Horizon 2

    • This is a sequel to Log Horizon which you've seen already. It picks up around the time of the Sports Festival where Shiroe is having some trouble keeping the city maintained. I know people are comparing this to SAO, but I'd actually compare this more to .hack//sign than SAO for its pace and social view as opposed to mindless combat like in SAO.
  6. Code: Breaker

    • Code: Breaker is one I forgot to mention. It's about a girl who witnesses a murder of sorts where people are burned by blue flames, yet the killer is only a boy her age. She tries to stalk him and finds out he is one of the mysterious Code: Breakers, a group of assassins who use magical abilities to kill people they deem "unworthy" (liars, murderers, cheaters, etc.). It's a bit dark, but comedic as well. Has a similarity to Blue Exorcist in some ways.

That's all I can recommend as of now. I would mention InuYasha or YuYu Hakusho, but I'm not sure if you've already seen them or not. If not, YuYu Hakusho is a great anime about a teen who dies and has to complete certain tasks to get his body back. Has a mix of comedy, romance, action, and some serious heartfelt moments. Accel World, although it's by the same creator of SAO, is a good comedic anime. Pretty typical Japanese nerd who crushes on hot girl cliché.

I hope I helped. :)

EDIT : Added some more.

I'll just touch on the ones I haven't already commented on/watched.

FullMoon wo Sagashite seems like a cool concept, I'll need to look at it. Also nothing wrong with older series.

Kikaider looks good, reminds me of Cutie Honey but without the transforming magical girl thing.

You helped a lot, even if some have already been said. Thanks for the suggestions!

It had an extremely rushed ending, and did need to make a few cuts here and there. The censorship on TV airing was also unnecessarily severe in places. Overall I'd say it wasn't terrible, but much like Elfen Lied before it you might be better served reading the manga, at least before watching the show.

No Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Hagane no Renkinjutsushi or gundam?!?! I don't know why they aren't on completed really... I am a rather mainstream otaku (if it isn't an oxymoron).

I recommend:

  • Shaman King
  • Saint Seiya
  • Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas – The Myth of Hades
  • Hagane no Renkinjutsushi Furumetaru Arukemisuto (FMA Brotherhood)
  • Gundam Wing
  • Gundam 00

At least Shingeki, Rurouni Kenshin, Elfen Lied and Patlabor are there :D

PS: I recommend everyone to download popcorntime.io, it's great for movies, anime and tv series!

Well I don't know, if OP didn't mention them is because either he has already seen them or he's not been interested in them, so I had to recommend them since they are sooo cool. I forgot about Evangelion... although I enjoyed more the Rebuild OVAs, is chapter 4.0 out yet?

I have seen most of these, just haven't put all of them on the list since I watched them when I was younger and would need a rewatch to know what to rate them.

Although gundam is the exception. i already mentioned it above, but I'm a completionist and Gundam is a nightmare. Trying to watch it all and in order is a tall task...

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions

yeah... there are a ton, but Wing and 00 are exquisite! You should at least watch those, and the OVA GW: Endless Waltz is good too, the OVA for 00 is shit though.

One last thing, both of those have separate universes so you don't have to watch the other ones to understand them.

I voted Mecha for one reason only... Code Geass is simply the best anime i have ever watched from all of the plot twists, strategic planning and the amazing way they ended it in season 2... it was one of the few anime that after watching it i ponied up the $80 per season (at the time now its higher on amazon) to own it even though it was relatively expensive. Side recommendations are Death Note (Season 1 only), FullMetal Alchemist (currently watching and love it), Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and if you like this kind of thing Rosario Vampire.

I think you haven't watched Inuyasha.

I really enjoyed that anime, the plot is what was most interesting to me with a very clever villain and an unexpected ending (last episode!!).
Although there are some filler episodes the anime has like 200 episodes only.

Plus: I love the opening songs! :)

I've never been a huge fan of anime, but there has been some that I really enjoyed.

I love Patlabor: The Movie and Patlabor 2: The Movie, although I'm not sure if those are the same as the versions of Patlabor you have listed. I figure it might be the same movies but Japanese vs. US labels.

One of my favorites is Dominion Tank Police, which is exactly what it sounds like. A police force that uses tanks instead of cars.

Also, I'm really surprised that Vampire Hunter D (1985) and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000). The first one is a classic movie, and the much delayed sequel really jazzed things up.

I believe the Patlabor Movies were just rehashes of the original Patlabor series. I don't remember though.

Dominion Tank Police is one I will watch. I love Masamune Shiro's work

And I'll check out Vampire Hunter D, I've read some of the manga and so I bet the series is good too

I mainly watch horror-thriller animes, but I seen a few pretty good ones.

Another (this was recommended before, but I am recommending it too. It has a good story, and a really breathtaking revelation)

Corpse Party (idk if it was recommended) PDP played the game version, but there is a 4 part anime series, and it's pretty good. It almost made me cry, even if I'm not that type of guy.

Danganronpa (aka Danganronpa: Hope's Academy and Despair's Students) This is the best one I have ever seen. The plot is awesome, and it doesn't have many "accidental sexy things". The narrative is really good, and the headmaster's personaility is well detailed too. Also it is available, and based on a visual novel, made for PSP. If you have a PS Vita, you can play this one, and the sequel too (which wasn't made as an anime yet), but decide if you want to play the PSV or the PSP translated version, because the two translations are very, very different.

Persona 4 The Animation (yeah based on a game, but) the plot is really good, so are the characters. If you have a PS 2 or PS Vita, you can play even play the game, which was based on.

Sword Art Online 1-2: This is a really good one too. The protagonist get captured in a video game, from which he can't exit, or the VR headset kills him. He has to defeat all 100 bosses to get released from the game. It's really good, but the second season doesn't really connects to the first one, except in characters.

And the all time classic: Yu-Gi-Oh! GX I've watched this, all four seasons with different languages. 1st: hungarian (my main language), 2nd: English (don't watch in english, it's like a german game. It's cut from all sex references, violent things, like guns and even bad language) 3rd: english, 4th: japanese with english sub. It was an awesome series, I can recommend it :)

I hope I could help :)

EDIT: Sorry: just realized your list. Well SAO and Yu-Gi-Oh aren't on it, os they worth a watch :)

Sorry, but I won't look at ur list and i'll just comment about some animes.

If you like a great story but don't mind a bit of comedy ecchi, "Sora no Otoshimono" is really nice, I like it because it's perverted humor is really brought together by it's bright colors and idioticness, while also using it to develop their characters. It holds a heartfelt story of how love is one of the most complex feelings and that the boundaries of what love is or who is allowed to feel love. Sadly it's 3rd season got halted and in turn they made a Movie to finish off the anime. The Movie requires you to read the Manga since it leaves out some major plot points, but if u read the manga the movie is nothing special it rather seems to be a last ditch effort to finish the project, why this decision was made is unknown to me.

  1. If you like straight up comedy and would enjoy a few laughs EVERY episode you should take a look at "Seto no Hanayome", now I can't say much about plot or story for this one since it is pure comedy and it is the most randomest thing I've ever seen that still maintains everything going into the same direction. It ends nicely without much of a cliffhanger and has some extra OVAs afterwards for if u wish to have some more laughs. It's English title is My bride Is a Mermaid, which should at least give you a slight premise of some of the characters. Great Soundtracks too

  2. If you enjoy an extensive anime with an even longer manga, "Hayate no Gotoku" is a nonsense slice of life comedy that spends most of it's first season being a complete parody and then starts to develop a more interesting story spread out into about 3 more seasons and a movie. To me the first season is split up into about 4 arcs based from the intros and outros, and I think that the last arc of the first season can be entirely skipped as it does the most randomest shit that makes you cringe and makes u wonder why you're still watching. I don't know what the makers were thinking and for better or for worse they thought so too because they didn't continue the story that occurred after the final arc of the first season and rather made a season 2 that goes back to a halfway point of season 1 and continues from there as if episodes 50ish-80ish never happened. Which is actually a great move on their part. I advise to watch the first season to the point of when they find out about an "Ultimate Butler Uniform" and then just cut off from their and go to season 2. I believe the anime has more than 200 episodes and idk if they are going to keep continuing since the movie came out of nowhere after 3 years and they then started more anime arcs after it.. The latest Season requires manga to know what happened as the anime skips very many arcs.

Those are few of my favorits so now ill just name out some random anime that I liked.

Angel Beats, Tora Dora, Mirai Nikki, Clannad and Clannad AfterStory, Haganai, Accel World, Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo.

All of these tend to revolve around a heartwarming story and I really recommend Angel Beats, Clannad and Clannad AfterStory and Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo.

Mirai Nikki and Accel World have a lot more action and a bit of dark stories.

I would recommend this site for some oldish comedy animes. Though the site no longer gets updated often it's archive of comedy anime has very accurate ratings and I would recommend watching that catches your eye that is above a rating of 6

I will be giving Texhnolyze a go through, although I don't know if I'll enjoy it since Lain wasn't the best. Too slow and with almost no plot/development/etc. Philosophy is good, but it can't make a series interesting entirely by itself.

Denpa Teki na Kanojo had me at Brains Base, which is one of my favorite studios.

Ping Pong the Animation looks good, I thought for a second you were recommending Ping Pong Club, which is just a little different.

I notice that Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden isn't on that list of yours. Mahoromatic is a sci-fi romantic comedy harem series [with elements of the literary tragic drama]. The basic premise is a combat android, driven by her guilt from her actions during the war with Saint, dedicates the rest of her life to serving her late commander's Son as a maid. It's somewhat typical shounen fare, but I still found it rather enjoyable.

Then there's Nyarko-san: Another Crawling Chaos, another rom-com and a satire, based on H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. Yeah. Enough said, right? There's quite a few parody/references to be found if you know the references.

That said, you've definitely watched more anime than I have.
