So I have been watching a lot of anime, and I have started to hit a brick wall. I don't really know what to watch, and I've already been through many of the top-ranked lists. So I thought that I would come to the wonderful people of SG for some help! Feel free to recommend some things, and a quick explanation of why people should watch it would be great!

I have a MAL list of all the things I have watched and what I rated them. Although it would be lovely to rewatch things I have already seen, it would be better to find new and exciting things to view.

Also I'm sure you all came in for the giveaways rather than out of the kindness of your heart. People who mention a show that I haven't watched and explain why I should watch it will be added to my whitelist. These lucky people will be allowed to join a bunch of bundle giveaways, and then will be promptly dropped from my whitelist after the giveaways finish. I might also be putting up an anime puzzle in here when I have the time, so even those who haven't watched anime but love to use their google-fu can enjoy.

Anyways, thank you for your assistance! Lets all enjoy anime together!

TLDR: Give me recommendations not on this list and explain why, I give you games and love.

EDIT: Wow, that was a large response. I'll try to get through everyone and respond to all of your posts, and then I'll whitelist everyone and create some giveaways. Check back in probably 5ish hours and I should have everything ready by then. Thanks for all of the support and recommendations!

EDIT2: After responding to four and a bit pages of recommendations, I need a break. I'll be back in an hour or so, hang tight. Giveaways should still be up when I said they would be, never fear.

EDIT3: Back for more commenting. Hopefully I can get to the bottom of this thread.

EDIT4: Finally made it to the bottom! I'll add everyone to my whitelist now and then post up the giveaways.

EDIT5: Whitelist giveaways are now up. They are all cheap bundle games, but I hope people still are interested.

Giveaway 2

EDIT6: Giveaways are over, and I'll be closing this thread. Thank you everyone for the suggestions!

My personal favorites this season are parasyte, terra formars and tokyo ghoul season 2. Older anime I recommend include berserk, gantz, and steins gate. They are a bit dark but give good feels. :) If you have seen all those. Check out gurren laggan, welcome to the nhk and ergo proxy. All fabulous anime!
Each have a mix of action to keep attention and dramatic back storys to get you involved in the characters. Some of it is sad but makes up for it with good animation, soundtracks and voice acting.

Well, I've already watched most of these, or they are currently airing and I won't be watching them immediately. The only one that doesn't fit in those categories is Terra Formars

It seems a little weak, looks like the characters are pretty boring and it's mainly for the fighting. Do the fights make the series worthwhile?

Thanks for the suggestions!

I see no Scrapped Princess on your list. That's definitely worth watching because of how well-executed it is.

It presents itself as a typical fantasy story (can't say more - spoilers). It's centred around a young girl born to the royal family but apparently killed at birth to avert a prophecy that she would be the "poison that will destroy the world" if she ever lived to her 16th birthday. She was secretly rescued and given to a family of commoners to look after. The story proper begins roughly 15 years later with her two older foster-siblings as her protectors, living a life of travel and anonymity in the hope than no-one discovers that she is still alive.

It's one of my absolute favorites. I agree with others that "Comedy" needed to be a category on your poll.

Although, I like absurdist comedy where I can't predict what's going to happen. Nichijou gave me that.

Edit: This is also from Nichijou. Who saw this coming?!

What about Valkyria chronicles? There's a game by the anime as well, its action / comedy sort-of. I'm up to the middle of it now, pretty decent.

I\d also recommend hack./sign if you want a slower-paced series with a bit more complex history.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I tend to try not to watch series where I have to also play the games to get the full story. They both look good, but I probably won't watch them until I have the time to play the games/own the games.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I didn't even know there were games based on the hack./ series. I'll check them out.

Also, Valkyria chronicles is (so far at least) a separate storyline, or more like a different version of the same story from the one in the game. There are quite fewer fillers involved in the series.

I'll try to think of something else, but you've watched like 5 times more animes than me, so don't count on me :)

Hmmm, if they are the same plot then I can probably watch Valkyria. It did look good, I'll have to give it a shot.

Unless I'm blind, 6 pages of comments and no one suggested Macross o.o

One of the 3 pillars of anime sci-fi, full of music, love triangles, mecha, etc. You should watch the SDF Macross, Macross Plus, Macross 7 and Macross Frontier at least ^_^

Wow thats a lot on your lists, you pretty much have everything on there that I have seen or its on your to watch list.

I suggest bumping up Noir, that was a great series.

I'm a big mecha fan, so I have to suggest everything Macross. The one I liked the most though was Macross Plus. There is a 4 part OVA and a movie, both are good, been a while so don't remember which one I liked more, I think it was the movie version.

And as an anime fan SHAME ON YOU for not having Akira on that list at all. Its old but its a really good Anime. Its always one that I recommend to people to watch. :)

Evangelion tv series, episodes 1 to 24, skip episodes 25 and 26. Skip Death and rebirth. Watch End of Evangelion. The rebuild of Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22 have a lot of chunks the same from the original show, just that they were reanimated and story changed slightly, and a whole new character added in, it also looks amazing. Evangelion 3.33 and 4.44 is all 100% new story. So thats why I am suggesting watching the original.

Escaflowne is another really good series/movie that has some mecha in it. I believe the series is just a longer version of the movie, its been a long long time since I seen it.

Armitage III good stand a lone movie, the ones that followed it were ok, but this first one was very enjoyable.

Ranma 1/2, this is a crazy comedy. 10 seasons, lots of OVAs, there is suppose to be some new stuff coming out soon if I remember right, and they even did a live action version which while not as good as the anime, was still fun to watch.

Patlabor 1 and 2. good mecha based movies, I prefer the first one. There is I think a 3rd one but I haven't seen it. They are also doing a live action one and even had a Patlabor suit with the truck that stands them up and moves them around. Should be interesting.

Vexille. The basics of it is Japan basically walled itself off from everyone and after many many years they send in a single agent to gather intel on whats going on there.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock. There is a series but also a basically new 3D animated movie that was really good. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Venus Wars - Its a movie about a war happening on Venus. Been a long time since I seen this, but it was pretty good. It had people on motorcycle like things trying to take on tanks that were the size of small stadiums if I remember right.

Noir looks pretty good, I downloaded it after watching Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom and never got to it. Then the harddrive died.

I will be watching Macross, never fear. Just posted above about it.

I will watch Akira, I just never got around to it. I normally watch anime movies with friends and series by myself, but I'll ask my friends (who have already seen it) to rewatch with me.

Already seen Evangelion, it was ok but kinda terrible as their budget ran out.

Already mentioned Escaflowne, Ranma 1/2, Patlabor, and Captain Harlock in the thread. I will be watching them all/already watched them.

Armitage III looks cool, and I like cyberpunk. I'll give it a try.

Vexille seems a bit meh. Is it really worthwhile?

Venus Wars seems interesting. I might have to watch it.

Thanks for all of the recommendations!

I'm watching Terra Formars atm and it's pretty good, even if you need a little time to find the uncensored version (this is why -> http://kotaku.com/as-far-as-anime-censorship-goes-this-is-pretty-ridicul-1645599166)
However it's very nice to follow if you like action anime with a strange story (bugs on Mars and people with animal powers to fight them). :)

Another one I'm following is Parasyte which is another action anime focused on the story of a boy who get infected by an alien parasyte that lives in his right arm (actually, it becomes its arm). Check it out!

Not sure what you would like more but I recommend:

Samurai 7 (underestimated title, old style art, but very interesting action plot, about samurais in mechanized world)

Hell Teacher Nube (I'm making subtitles for it to my language, on the first sight it looks like childish title, but it's very nice comedy an it left very nice feeling after I finished it).

I also have noticed you didn't watched Black Cat.. well it's classic, give it a try.

Black Blood Brothers - for fans of good comedy and fantasy (but comedy isn't leading tag).

Air Gear - you gotta be living in a cave if you didn't watched it, seriously :D

Asura Cryin' --> I bet you will like it, everyone does.

Princess Lover --> it was pretty popular when was airing, strange it's forgotten, I love this title.

I have much more on mind, but if you like what I recommend I can tell more :>

Trigun. Trigun Trigun Trigun watch Trigun. Trigun is a masterpiece of plot, world-building, characters, and themes, being one of the very few shows to be action packed, hilarious (at times, also can be very serious), and truly deep. I cannot recommend Trigun higher. Plus, kickass soundtrack!

If you're in the mood for something really lighthearted, I also recommend Sergeant Frog. Pure comedy gold; 'nuff said.

Berserk : not as good as the paper manga, but the dark medieval fantasy is enjoyable, if you don't mind something as dark as reality ( blood and rape ), then it's a good one. The paper is much better thought and the tv serie is incomplete.

Samurai champloo is a laugh, hip hop samurai.

Genshiken is to otakus what big bang theory is to geeks

FLCL takes inspiration from the west, if you liked Redline you will like FLCL, crazy and wtf am i watching

Monster, again the paper is better but it's a good dark detective like story

Wolf's rain is very poetical

Gunsligger girl is a dark and sad tale of girl kid assassins

Lain is good if you like computers and darkness, bit myserious, i din't like the ending at all thought

Black Lagoon is an excellent action anime set in the blue of asia troubled waters

At the moment i am watching durara which is very funny fantasy in todays Tokyo, reminds me of get backers.

Those that are already on your list i still mention so that perhaps more voices will put them higher in your list.

In any case here is something you might want to look at, otherwise i would just end up writing a book full of thousands of animes and it wouldn't help you at all to have thousands to watch [( life is too short ) :] (http://images.wikia.com/animu-mango/images/0/04/1001066.jpg)

And my avatar is from one of my favorite movies, the wings of honneamise.

Also that image is super tiny. I think you linked the wrong thing.

For the image just zoom in, i'm on firefox and i just need to lick on it once for that.

If you have seen all those...

I have loved Kempachi strongest disciple, it's a young guy learning various martial arts, it's very funny, althought i might be biased since i am learning as well.

Sanzoku no Musume Ronja is, to put it simply, for kids, i recommend to simply watch the first episode and see if you like it, nothing really fancy, but it just reminds me of all the stuff i was watching when i was a kid, and it is definitely suitable to show to kids.

Otherwise will all the good recomendations here and your own list, i will just recommend you my favourite paper manga : Bremen. It's a punk story of a guy who wants to be the ultimate rocker. It has a very good ending, perfect characters, and a surprise or two that actually deserve that name. But more than anything, i am in love with the willpower that emanate from its pages and characters.

And two animes that are guaranteed to make you laugh :
school rumble is just a high school thing, nothing special really, but its just so funny.

And let me just link you to the opening of jungle waa itsumo whatever it's called checking now apparently the real name is Haré+Guu, hilarious stuff with a girl that eats people : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W56l-og_aMs that opening is what the manga is, danccing and funny

Oh speaking of opening a good anime is witch hunter robin ( which is also short ), the name is pretty self explanatory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsP6EIIcaLY
