So I have been watching a lot of anime, and I have started to hit a brick wall. I don't really know what to watch, and I've already been through many of the top-ranked lists. So I thought that I would come to the wonderful people of SG for some help! Feel free to recommend some things, and a quick explanation of why people should watch it would be great!

I have a MAL list of all the things I have watched and what I rated them. Although it would be lovely to rewatch things I have already seen, it would be better to find new and exciting things to view.

Also I'm sure you all came in for the giveaways rather than out of the kindness of your heart. People who mention a show that I haven't watched and explain why I should watch it will be added to my whitelist. These lucky people will be allowed to join a bunch of bundle giveaways, and then will be promptly dropped from my whitelist after the giveaways finish. I might also be putting up an anime puzzle in here when I have the time, so even those who haven't watched anime but love to use their google-fu can enjoy.

Anyways, thank you for your assistance! Lets all enjoy anime together!

TLDR: Give me recommendations not on this list and explain why, I give you games and love.

EDIT: Wow, that was a large response. I'll try to get through everyone and respond to all of your posts, and then I'll whitelist everyone and create some giveaways. Check back in probably 5ish hours and I should have everything ready by then. Thanks for all of the support and recommendations!

EDIT2: After responding to four and a bit pages of recommendations, I need a break. I'll be back in an hour or so, hang tight. Giveaways should still be up when I said they would be, never fear.

EDIT3: Back for more commenting. Hopefully I can get to the bottom of this thread.

EDIT4: Finally made it to the bottom! I'll add everyone to my whitelist now and then post up the giveaways.

EDIT5: Whitelist giveaways are now up. They are all cheap bundle games, but I hope people still are interested.

Giveaway 2
Giveaway 3

EDIT6: Giveaways are over, and I'll be closing this thread. Thank you everyone for the suggestions!

What is your favorite genre of anime?

View Results
Slice of Life
Action

Other (feel free to say what is best)
I don't watch anime/I have no favorite

The Vision of Escaflowne (Tenkū no Esukafurōne)

It's not quite as epic as most modern anime, and, well, the main character is a teenage girl who's constantly thinking about her feelings towards guys, but besides that it's a pretty nice "short" series (around 25 episodes) with original realms and a bunch of mechas. If you like steampunk and big robots fighting like medieval knights that's the stuff. It's also a pretty crazy melting pot, you got all previous plus psychic powers, ancient lost city, technology, planets, ...

There is also a movie, which is the whole series shorten, apparently the characters personnalities a quite different, less occidental, the girl is just depressive so maybe it's a plus compared to the series xD

You haven't seen desert punk?! It's a very.. vulgar anime that will have you laughing at every single episode. Next to The Devil is a Part-Timer, it is one of the funniest animes I've seen. Seriously, watch it, it's well worth it. Also, the intro is a live-action sequence, so don't let that make you think it isn't an anime. But please, do yourself a favor and check it out.

I can't believe there isn't a single mention of Spice and Wolf anywhere. Absolutely my favorite anime. Still mad it only has two seasons.

Well-written romantic slice-of-life manga/anime about a medieval trader who, upon his travels, happens across a weakened goddess of harvest, who has the form of a woman with a wolf tail and ears and agrees to travel with her to her homeland in the north. Upon the way they get caught up in various adventures, money-making schemes, tangle with the Church, et cetera; what I like most about it is the romantic aspects are subtle rather than in your face, which is good because I usually hate romance as a genre. Most of the show is about economic subjects like how a futures market functions, currency speculation, the role of trade in medieval society, and so on and so forth. I first watched it while in college getting my degree in this exact subject, so I might be a little biased there; it isn't too hard to understand what's going on but some interest in the subject helps. Their friendship evolves naturally over the course of both seasons rather than just being a given.

Has an English dub with acceptable quality voice acting, if you don't prefer subs.

Look like more Monogatari has aired since I last watched. Well, I will watch these OVAs.

I'll watch Soukyuu no Fafner after the most recent one finishes airing.

Hidamari Sketch seems like a regular slice of life. I will likely get around to it.

Yuyuyu looks surprisingly good. Will definitely watch it.

Yuyushiki looks like another regular slice of life. I will get to it.

One that I haven't seen listed that I really enjoy is Sora no Method.
Little Busters (refrain and Ex) & Kyoukai no Kanata were both already mentioned but I would recommend these as well :b
Edit: Also the 2nd season of Chuunibyou might be worth watching just for the sake of finishing the series (I haven't heard "great" things about it). I would check to see if someone already mentioned it but I don't want to ctrl+f through all the comments again (:

Well damn, I typed up a whole long thing and SteamGifts ate it :/

Noir on your "plan to watch" list I remember really enjoying, although it's been a loooong time since I watched it.

I'm one of the few magical girl answerers in the poll, so I can offer a few of those. Nanoha is a fun series, but I'd recommend watching the movies over the TV series for the first two seasons because the movies are way tighter, better paced, and better animated. The third series, StrikerS, suffers from major pacing problems and way, waaaaaaaaay too many characters, but there are still some enjoyable moments and cool fights if you find yourself wanting more after the movies.

I like Precure, but I don't know if it'd suit your tastes very much. It's sort of like anime My Little Pony - aimed at young girls, but still enjoyable to a broader audience with charming characters and some cool plots, if that makes sense. Up to you whether that sounds worthwhile. My personal favorite season is Fresh Precure, but Heartcatch is the favorite of a lot of other people.

There's also Yuki Yuna is a Hero (Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de aru), if you want something Madoka-y, but it's not as well-executed as Madoka imo and the end is kind of an asspull.

Yeah, I always copy my posts before posting just so SG doesn't eat them.

Noir does look pretty good.

Nanoha has been getting a lot of love, same with Precure. I will check out both of them.

Someone just posted about Yuyuyu above you, I do plan on trying it.

Well, neither Ranma 1/2, nor Sailor Moon are on that list so I'd say you didn't go through all the most popular ones.
I really recommend Ranma 1/2 if you are into comedy. It's mainly comedy with occasional action (but still whacky sort of action). Anime is really good, but the manga is a flat out masterpiece.
Sailor Moon... well, it's THE Magical Girl classic if you are into that. :D

As for favourite genre... I'd go with comedy which you haven't listed so I guess a second best would be Magical Girl even though I've watched, like, only 2 of those. :P

I've seen some Sailor Moon, but I'd have to rewatch it to add it to my list.

Ranma 1/2 looks ok, I explain my reasoning for it in the thread.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I know comedy wasn't there, but slice of life and comedy have enough overlap that I just put them together.

Just skimmed through for now, so i'm sorry if someone has suggested this one off the top of my head or i missed it (i ran a search for both japanese or english names):

Juuni Kokuki aka The Twelve Kingdoms.
It's pretty darn good in my honest opinion and on such a huge list of watched animes i think it's a huge miss. ;)
It's a solid 8-9 minimum for just about anyone into anime.

You rated Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood a 10 and Sunabouzu an 8.
Can't give Sunabouzu more as well because of the fail ending... :( Made me laugh so hard thoughout though. :)
You just made my whitelist merely because of those 2. :P

EDIT: Also the movie Stranger: Mukou Hadan aka Sword of the Stranger. Another solid 8-9, depending on personal preferences.

Twelve Kingdoms is apparently really good, I'll need to download it. Thanks for the suggestion

I really enjoyed both. I normally recommend anything with an 8 or higher, and FMA was definitely a 10. Desert Punk was pretty great, I do agree that the ending wasn't the best, but it kinda fit the series a little.

Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting! Is a good anime with 75 episodes, its an anime about Boxing and Comedy. The main character is Ippo Makunouchi. I wasn't a fan of boxing but after i started watching the anime i watched 23 episodes on the first day, finished the anime in less than a week. After that i became interested in boxing,The anime is really addicting once you get into it.
There is also a season 2 called Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger,it has 25 eps or so and its english subbed only.

Next anime: Kiss x sis

Kiss x sis is an anime about a brother and his 2 step sisters, both of his sisters love him and cough get in alot of perverted situations with him. Its a fucked up anime but if your a pervert like me who likes these hentai-ish animes like Seikon No Qwaser cough go ahead and watch it.

Trigun - One of the classics, starts out as a silly comedy but gets extremely heavy afterwards. It bears some similarities with Cowboy bebop, mainly the scifi western theme.

Bartender - A less known thing about a small bar and a bartender dude who listens to his patrons' stories. It's very interesting and has a great soundtrack.

Perfect Blue - A hardcore psycho-thriller movie.

Blue Gender - Giant robots vs giant bugs + gore and boobs, needs no explaining.

Kazemakase tsukikage Ran - A series with a female samurai and her goofy sidekick friend. If you like lighthearted samurai tales then you might like this one.

Ippatsu kikimusume - Short stories with a girl that always gets into the most improbable but lifethreatening situations. There's always a narrator explaining quite scientifically what impact the situation may have on her health and how her current plan to get out of it might or might not work. It's tons of laughs.

Trigun has been mentioned a lot. I will watch it.

Bartender looks very curious. I think I can check this out!

Perfect Blue looks good. Will watch.

Blue Gender looks entertaining. I'll try it out.

Kazemakase tsukikage Ran looks like not a lot happens. Samurai slice of life isn't exactly regular though, so I'll give it a look.

Ippatsu kikimusume looks exactly like the type of short series I enjoy.

Sorry, I don't watch anime nor am I a fan of the art style and culture. If I was familiar with anime and enjoyed it, I'd give you some recommendations, but unfortunately the closest suggestions I could provide would be pornographic in nature. The only anime whose names I know are JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Chobits, and Full Metal Alchemist, the first of which is the only worthwhile anime according to many of the weebs anime fans to whom I've spoken.

Oh well, I guess I don't qualify for your whitelist. Thanks for your giveaways anyway!

I would suggest Kaiji and Kaiji 2. It's theme is gambling how it can ruin your life and how people try to escape from it.
If you manage to somehow be okay with it's horrible (for me) animation then I'm sure you gonna love it.
Another one I'd suggest is Gungrave. It's about a group of friends who get into Mafia and try to rank up. You can see how power changes people and what are old friends of your capable of doing.

Not the top suggestions but w/e I was about to suggest you've already seen it. :D

  • Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso --- Its romance and music theme really blended well. It will move you from a feeling to another feeling quickly like happy to sad, sad to relaxing, or relaxing to sad
  • Kuroko no Basket --- Well, it's on 3rd season but at first I expected it just as the same as other sports genre anime, boring (for me at least, hehe). But, I enjoyed it very much from the start. It's neither too serious or too awkward.
  • Terra Formars --- It's almost the same as Shingeki no Kyojin but with cockroach humanoid

Well i noticed you like ecchi funny anime, so go watch : Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko , there's not even a nipple in there but both the plot and animations are really superb, with a lot of pervy jokes from the MC who lost his power to hold back what he says often getting in trouble, alongside her friend who lost all emotions together trying to recover those two things back.
